Slow Down?

Modern surveying looks nothing like when I worked with survey crews at an engineering firm....It's really changed. But for fun you could do this to replace the last plane table and alidade surveyors in the nation. There were lots of them on Seismic "doodlebug" surveys of days gone by. One old surveyor in Oklahoma was still working with plane table and alidade as late as 2012. I doubt many surveyors could even use a plane table. I mention it because I have a plane table and alidade and know how to use it, though a mite rusty. Now it is all non-mechanical... they work with GPS and laser technology. And what else? Called a "Total" station. :)

The problem is related ( RE ) fields are subject to same slow down cycles...renting or leasing less so...property management is a possibility but the options in RE related how much of appraisal experience matters? A lot of related RE jobs are customer service/sales or data entry...but it does make sense to stay in RE if one finds it a more natural fit.
Leasing is gang busters in this area. If you can deal with the public, which is not a strong point of mine, this is a strong field and appears to be staying that way with current housing costs. A good friend of mine is a maintenance supervisor for several high end apartments for the region. He says that leasing agents are also in high demand. They make decent money

I used to rent apartments years ago in NYC...it is more straight forward than sales, the people either need to move or not...

Your comments indicate you do not need appraisal income to support yourself, which is a good thing since the "not free market" is essentially putting many out of business...you (and looks I am following ) are essentially out of business now despite your experience and competence due to this "bid" system which is really a form of kickbacks. If I ever do find interest from legal side will let you know.

I do need my appraisal income. Had saved six months before layoff, almost gone. Starting to pick up more work as I have made a lot of appraiser friends over the years thankfully!

AMC merger. Let the games begin.

Valued Appraisers,

As you know, Apex is in the process of merging with Value Trend Solutions, another great appraisal management firm. As part of that process, we’re revisiting all of our policies and procedures to make sure we are operating as efficiently and effectively as possible. We’re also reaffirming our commitment to being the most appraiser friendly company in the industry.

With that in mind, we’re altering our appraiser payment policy to get the fees you’ve earned into your hands faster. Traditionally, Apex has cut checks weekly, but those checks pay files completed 30 days prior. Here’s the new policy:

Ø There will be 2 paychecks per month – one on the 15th (or last business day preceding) and one on the last business day of the month.

Ø The 15th paycheck will encompass orders completed from the 16th of the previous month through the end of the previous month. For example, the January 15th check will cover orders completed from December 16th – December 31st.

Ø The last paycheck of the month will encompass orders completed from the 1st of the current month through the 15th of the current month. For example, the January 31st check will cover orders completed from January 1st – January 15th.

Effectively, we’re shortening the payment cycle from 30+ days to 15 – 30 days. It’s true that there will be fewer checks per month, but those checks will be larger and will cover more recently completed files. For those of you who currently work with VTS, this is the payment policy they already employ.

Apex will be sending out a check today (January 4th) on its normal pay cycle. However, the next check will be cut on January 15th and will cover all files completed through December 31st. Also, please note that it is possible that you will receive check from Apex that pays files completed for VTS (or vice versa). This is completely intentional, and you may deposit the check as you normally would.

Once again, thank you for taking this journey with us! We’re completely committed to being the most appraiser friendly company in the industry, and we’ll continue to lean on this commitment as we consider future

More and more companies will pay your education expenses, even college. Walmart is one that has started paying almost all the employee's tuition and education expenses in many cases.

Whenever I see the word "efficiency" coupled with appraisals by a company, it translates to lower pay. I dont' recall a standard in USPAP about "efficiency"...(sarcasm ) . Efficiency is one of those corporate buzzwords that means they expect to pay less, for more work with a faster delivery

Engineering and military and medical professions pay a ton on college and technical education expenses for the student that works for them.

San Francisco lighthouse seeks caretakers. Salary: $130,000

"A job search sure to stoke fantasy and envy is now under way for two keepers who will be based at the East Brother Light Station, which has lit up the northern reaches of San Francisco Bay since 1873. Although they will share the salary and require qualifications that will rule out many would-be applicants, there has already been broad interest in the positions."

I'm sure the qualifications are to have an E&O policy that covers any shipwrecks or shark attacks during your watch.
