Mike, when a suspension shows up as "voluntary" is that usually an indication that the person has retired? What other circumstances lead to "voluntary" suspension?

I am not that familiar with this particular issue. The people I know that retire simply give up their license, and their license simply shows up as "inactive" if one does a license search.
I believe that voluntary suspension deals with the appraiser voluntarily giving up their license in lieu of disciplinary action. I also believe that if the appraiser attempts to get their license activated, the case/disciplinary action will be dealt with at that time.

You are correct. In many states you can "voluntary surrender" to keep your complaints secret, because you are facing civil or criminal charges, or don't want to go thru the embarrassment of a public hearing. I know of a few cases where the FBI was involved and the appraisers had no reason to go to before an appraisal board hearing and put everything on public record. They just don't show up for the hearing (and are revoked) or they mail in their license card as a voluntary surrender.
North Carolina does not have an "inactive" status. You either have an active license (you don't have to be appraising) or you simply have no license.

This includes dead people, people who had their license revoked, people who were licensed in 1995 and long, long long ago stopped appraising and have never renewed again. It also shows people sitting in a prison cell as inactive.

That explains what I was wanting to know. Thank you both.
There was an appraiser who was recently revoked in Missouri who had previously voluntarily suspended in Oklahoma. At the time, he tried to pass that voluntary off as just being tired of working in that State.
