Looks like Gary Curtis's website needs an update.

A question here????

He has surrendered his real estate appraisal license.

Does CA require or issue a license for personal property or machinery?

North Carolina does not. So a former real estate appraiser could simply start appraising personal property or machinery. In that case the appraiser could CHOOSE to comply with USPAP but it would not be a mandatory thing. No license, no certification...all you need are a few unknowing clients. I have a good friend who is a CG real estate appraiser here who also appraises and grades comic books (as a good side line).

I wonder if this fellow just moved right on over to machinery and his web-site is up to date..........saying nothing about real estate???

Can anybody tell me what Ken Potente did , he was my mentor and there is no love lost here, but I couldn't find anything in the minutes of the state board meetings. Is there anywhere to look?

Isn't voluntary when they turn their license in instead of renewing their license? I think it has to do with their liability in the future for their work in their states within their state's statutes ( defines cessation). I had a friend turn her's in for this reason in one of the southern states.

Could be.....but you would need to convince me.

If you were to stop appraising today your liability would be for your prior appraisals.

If you simply let your license expire and you do no more appraisals after today....your liability would also be for your prior appraisals.

If you SURRENDER your license.....your liability would also be for your prior appraisals.

There is no difference in liability.

There may be some exceptions but every voluntary surrender I know of was done because there was an appraisal board case (or cases) against the appraiser, they knew they were guilty, knew they could not win and there was no need to spend time or money to wind up with a public hearing.

In NC, if you surrender your license.......no one will ever know about the complaints you had pending because that is one of the carrots the state will offer to get rid of a bad apple and spare the cost of a public hearing. Complaints simply go away because you no longer have a license.

NC isn't the only state that does this, in fact the Feds do it to. Here's a local example.

I sure would like to know exactly what these guys did. I can imagine, of course, and there are lots of rumors.

Yes, works that way but I also see the futility of fighting even if you think or know you could/should win. At my age I would have to think long and hard about going thru anything beyond the first process. If it didn't go well, then do I spend the $30,000 - $75,000 that some people have? I know one lady that finally threw in the towel after paying $20,000 for an administrative lawyer who charges some $300 an hour. He was confident they could get it overturned but might have to go to appeals court.

Secondly, the decision is made worse if you have any other license. Losing here could threaten everything from a plumbers license, home inspector license, or in my case it would threaten my geological license.
