Tablet Appraising

You are debating personal taste and user type, If one chooses they can adapt to the phone quite nicely (using Total for Mobile), and if your not comfortable don't. I started on my tablet, then got tired of the "clunkiness" if you will (holding laser, large tablet and phone in pocket.. and did not prefer tablet for pix because field of view was slightly smaller). I bought a used iphone PLUS (large format) and loved it. Using laser I'm just shooting dimension, swipe and tap. If I need to review I zoom in with two fingers. Never went back! I have a trainee on the ipad mini, He seems to like it. Text is just about as small as my iphone however. If font size is important than stick with the larger ipads. Heck do what I did and try both; being able to put the phone in my pocket and climb around is great (plus size still fits a pocket). I bought the iphone 6+ used several years ago and it's still going strong (after two screen replacements, 1st non oem screen replacement went bad).
Good Luck

Thanks for the responses. Right now I'm leaning towards a Surface Pro tab since it can act like a tablet during inspections then act like a computer to actually process the report. I wonder if anyone has has any experience using this to complete a report.

I'm a bit of an Apple fan-boy which isn't helped by the fact that Total cannot be run on a Mac without boot camp. Wish I could just do everything on my iPad during inspections then Macbook at home.

I do that stuff at the desk. I just measure and calculate area on site.

You get a house like this to sketch it doesn't matter if you have a phone, tablet, or graph paper. This is a tough house to measure and sketch. Otherwise you can sketch anything on a phone with one hand that you can on a tablet. Size of the house doesn't really matter.

Joe Flaccos,

Stop copying sketches from the internet. I did that one last week. LOL.

Hey all

Does anyone have experience completing reports on a tablet?

I was just wondering which I should be investing in, an iPad Pro with the Total Mobile software, or a Surface Tablet.

Thanks for your feedback!

Hey,

Costco has Samsung tabs on sale, really deep discount. The newest version is coming out soon. May want to wait.

The newest version is what I use with Alamode. It has a flash!!! If you mess around with the camera function, it has a wide screen.

I have a old ASUS, which was great. Flash and wide screen.

I would not recommend Microsoft for the field. I started out with that. They weigh to much and cost to much.

The problems with doing it with a kind of Laptop are:
1). Something bigger to have to carry around.
2). You are going to have to sit at the desk and do it anyway. Why not just sync it to a larger computer and run with a few monitors. Plus you have a larger drive. What I’ve done is get a McBook Pro (2017) with a large SSD drive. I ru parallels which means I can run Mac and Windows simultaneously. That way I can add monitors and other things like scanners, printers, etc. Not sure how that would work on a Surface Pro.
3). I have the IPHONE Plus. Better camera. I have an IPAD PRO which I use for larger sketches. But the picture taking ability is not as good. Doesn’t have a wide enough angle for me. Also the IPHONE Plus works on 99% of the houses. You can stick it in your pocket. Make phone calls, check emails, etc. And take quality pictures.
4). Takes me minutes to sync and set up the report.
5). Also makes it easier for taking comp photos. Much handier.

I used an IPAD for years, but the IPHONE Plus is a better all around tool.

Get a good computer for adding monitors etc. Probably the most efficient thing to do is have 2 or 3 monitors. Use the IPHONE PLUS. And you’ll have a great set up. I’ve been paperless since 2005. Love it.

Attached is my set up.

I have a disto also. The Samsung is more rectangular, which I find better for sketching. The flash comes in handy and I use it all of the time.

The clip board is Velcro to the back of the case. I can simply de-tach the clip board and attach it to gutters or the lip of the vinyl siding, etc. The case also has a handle that can bend, so it can be placed on the ground for shots. The case is also used for those 1-5ft shots that needs a target, fireplaces for example.

I am much more productive using a tablet as compared to a phone. Some one calls, and the screen is bigger and the form factor is larger. It's been awhile, but I think the tablet has more features, I know so in the sketching mode.
