Heard an interesting tid bit the other day

it costs $75+ per hour to make an automobile by the Big 3

it costs $45 an hour for Honda, etc.

My husband says $1,500 of each car (Big 3) goes to the health plan.

I am not a believer in philosophies, however, I was previously informed the Mayan calendar ends in 2012. Although I usually phshaw such talk, I am thinking our government might just be leading us down the path where an end, a violent end, may be within our sights.

When will the arrest warrants and indictments be handed out for the people that cooked the books?
MY BOLD

Past and present as well as benefits for past employees.

Thats what many don't fully understand these are large , old , companies tied to Union employee contracts and benefits w/ pensions.
It's not a slap at unions it is what it is.

It's not just in this field either.

Older companies that grow and have employees retire with full benefits weigh heavily on overhead which in turn has made it harder for older companies to compete with newer companies in the same field that do not have those same costs. Many from other countries.

If GM goes, hang on to your wallet and your hat because I think it's gonna be a real unexpected Bumpy ride with all the fallout.

We think housing market failure is bad, just think about the number of autos on the road made by GM, Ford and Chrysler. Now think if next week they all closed up.:shrug:

Can't make it today's real estate industry? Be a mechanic!

Are there any major chain gas stations with mechanics on duty anymore?

The bailout will continue to work as long as the blue cities successfully bleed the red counties of their resources.

The red areas of the country are the most dependent on government welfare such as farm subsidies and military bases.

Military bases are a form of welfare?

$75 x 37.5 hrs x 50 weeks = $140,625 annual salary + bennies
it costs $45 an hour for Honda, etc.
$45 x 37.5 hrs x 50 weeks = $84,375 annual salary + bennies
And I decided to be an appraiser - FOOL :new_all_coholic:

I think they get off some more deer season also[UAW contract];
that seems more reasonable than the salary.

I like my 6 cylinder GM old OLDS;
but like Honda, Toyota, Nissan better...................

Hubby hauls for a company which makes the dash boards for the Malibu, etc. They haul 500 loads per month, full of dash boards to the plant in Kansas. I don't know if you've seen a rack full of parts, but they generally have 100's per rack, and lots of racks in the trailers. You would probably be amazed at how many cars are pulled off the assembly lines in any given day.

His buddy hauls for a car hauling company out of Minneapolis. They typically get a load of cars (7-9) out of the auction and deliver it to points west (California, mainly). However, no full loads for him for the past couple months, he has had to do piecemeal work, 7 cars to seven different drop points.

His boss told him the other day he is not sure how much longer the company will be in business - seems 78% of the cars in the auction are going back to auction. Now, a lot of these 'auction' cars are actually lease returns, and they are usually sold out on a weekly basis.

Not looking good for the used car industry either.

But, if the Big 3 are allowed to go down, there will be hundreds of thousands of people affected. Truck drivers, trucking companies, ma and pop shops who make, design, fabricate, and deliver parts, small to large companies who are contracted to the Big 3 for various pieces, tire manufacturing, rubber hose manufacturing, battery manufacturing, window manufacturing, steel, fiberglass, cushions, leather and cloth seat manufacturers, and on and on. In some way, shape or form, a large percentage of this country is tied up or dependent upon the automobile industry.

There are a lot of American GM retired people here in SW Florida. If there pension and their 15 cent drug plan goes away there will be some big problems here. The local news are interviewing these people on a nightly basis and their scared out of their minds. One poor guy has a $1200 per month anti rejection drug for his lung transplant. If GM goes down so does he. I think the Canadian retires unit of GM might be better off since they operate their retirement system a little different. Anyway, I wouldn't work in a factory for any money, however if they were promised "stick with us" for 35 years and you can retire to a relatively half decent life after work...well then they got screwed. Is it GM fault...yup...producing gas gusslers... is it the governments fault..yup...not making the big 3 to conform to miles per gallon rules.

It is not the Unions Fault, the big 3 just Engineered crappy gas guzzling cars. They are still running in an old model of production and how to run an efficient. If they renegotiate or just get rid of the Unions, they will still have the same problems. If a foreign country can open up here and start producing cars at a profit, you know that their is a problem with the Big Wigs on these boards.

Even if we do just bail them out, give it another 6 months before they burn that money, NOBODY IS BUYING. The only profitable places are going to be part and repair shops.
