The end of NCVForms - Now what

Julia,

Homeputer does give you XML and ENV delivery. I think they're selling it for $99 special through the end of the month. At that price it's worth it just as a backup program

I'll buy it if I can import Alamode Total reports and create an "env" format report as a result.

Does anyone here know if that can be done?

JD may have a viable product he can market just with the env converter alone. Make it work and I'll sign up right now!

You do have to wonder...
Acrobat files generated by all of the software vendors are not images;
they hold all the data / text + images.
I'd be willing to bet that if there are 4-5 primary vendors, each generates
an acrobat (PDF) file that is inherently similar in pattern / format for every
appraisal file from that vendor.
If so, why not generate .env files from the PDF file from each /any of the vendors?

BTW... Checked Homeputer last night, $69 for the package
+ (effectively) $90/year for *license* to use their .env file converter.

i really don't recall everything but when i researched this prior to leaving alamode the only software package i found that could do something like this was ACI, and then they could only "read" or "import" from a pdf file. as far as i was able to find out no one can read/use/convert alamode files. they are proprietary.

ymmv.

Not sure I'm reading it the same as you

$69 for the package or $99 for the package with the upgrades one of which is the .env file converter

My Bad.
I got to cost from a different page on the site, did not see or at least did not notice pricing on that page. Agreed..$99 1st year; good through 31st

Just export your a la mode report to UAD XML, and use Homeputer or any other formfiller to import it. Then add in your addenda (UAD XML doesn't have the whole report), and you're done. Assuming you keep your XML files as you go, you'd quickly have all your old templates built back up and could switch to using Homeputer pretty easily. The same of course goes for any two form fillers.

If you're willing to entrust your entire business to $99, you should do so. Most aren't, but for those who are, it's a perfect solution.

I don't believe the cost factor quoted.

I do, however, believe it's easy. It can be done with a 99 cent app. Apple has done it thousands of time on things infinitely more complicated than just converting a file format. Teenage game app developers would laugh at how simple the process of converting to the env file format is. It's all two dimensional - no sound - no motion - it's just a printed report! It's all about making money off the customer.

As one common example - there is no reason Flash can't run on Android, but it doesn't - and it's not because of technical issues. It's marketing and ripping off the customer in the process.

Wow! I wish I had you programming for me! I could have obviously saved thousands of dollars and hours! i never realized how easy it was to convert something to a ridiculous ENV format. How stupid was I spending all that time and effort doing so!!!

Should have just hired a kid to do a 99 cent app for me to do it!

Tell you what. Go spend some time writing your own software to do it, farm it out to India if you want. Stop using third party software and just use what you create. See how long you stay in business.

I love when people think it is so easy or some idiot with a few excel spreadsheets and no data exporting capabilities whining about monopolies that don't exist thinks software developers charge too much.

Be a professional. Buy the best tools and it helps you provide the best service. The one's who keep cost as a factor in this business are usually the ones who suffer the most during slow times.

As for converting PDF's, even that is not as straight forward as you think. Yes, I can easily read everything in a PDF...lines, pictures, text, etc.. But it is much more difficult to actually extract JUST the data than you think, and there are NOT 99 cent apps or Apple converters for this, just format changers, which is different from actually discerning content. It is one thing to be able to get all the text and pictures and display them: it is entirely another thing to know what they are and where they go in some other proprietary format.

JMNSHBPOO (Just my not so humble but po'd opinion considering all I had gone through in the last 20 years writing appraisal software and always listening to people who have never done it tell me how easy it is)

Homeputer question

You cannot convert reports from other vendors into homeputer. Beware of their money back guarantee. They are refusing my refund request & I bought the program about a week ago.

Many years ago I played with Homeputer. I did get it to work, but wasn't overly happy with it. I switched to NCV then and was completely content with that forms suite.

Interesting that Homeputer wouldn't refund your money. I emailed with them a month or two ago asking if they had a trial that I could do for free first before buying. He said no, but that they offer a 30 day money back guarantee if I was at all unhappy. I didn't go for it.
