Sorry About The Loss

Hello JD,

So sorry to hear about the loss in Court, as you know I was rooting for you all the way.

Is there any chance that all of faithful users could get a lifetime / permanent activation code as a parting gift? I'm just getting ready to install all of my software on a new computer (with dreaded Win8) and the last thing I need right now is to start learning a new appraisal program. No one hates to see you out of the appraisal software business more than me, you provided not only an alternative to the big boys and their games but also a valuable alternative point of view on things.

If you could see your way clear to give us a permanent unlock/reinstall/activation code at least it would give us all a little more leeway in having to make the big switch.

And I too also hope that JD can bounce back with a "new" software product, but until then I hope he can give us all a sorely needed extension.

Thanks again,
George E. Nervik

I don't understand what you mean by "Symbian OS file". I thought I attached a zipped Excel 2010 file.

In my downloads folder it shows up as TEST URAR FORM .XLSX. Aren't we fighting them in Iraq & Syria?

OK, I downloader IT VIA SAFARI BROWSER TO MY MAC SINCE I HAVE Virtual machines with Windows 8.1, XP & Win 7. I ahso have applications that can open xcel docs. The .XLSX suffix I looked up & it indicated it was Symbian OS file:shrug:

I truly understand fighting deep pockets. Our courts increasingly deny access to the 'man on the street' trying to gain his day in court. Impressive attorneys and corporate power holds sway. It seems good guys fall by the wayside. Summary judgment has become the mantra, regardless of legal inconsistency.
I happened on this thread accidently as I am searching for feedback on changing software providers after many years with one provider. I feel they are out of touch with the small appraiser's needs and more interested in increasing sales with little to support their pricing. I don't need a cloud or vault to support for years. I feel shut out when I don't buy the bells and whistles. I lost business by not having access to ENV,etc. and other options. My subscriptions, MLS and fees, license, E & O, software program, etc. make this business increasingly less profitable already. The last time my provider made major revisions to their program, they shut down access to the prior program forcing compliance without prior default preferences. I am considering Homeputer. My questions are what about XML/UAD pdf converter or interface?? Plus is there industry resistance to Homeputer or other providers. I get asked what software I use all the time. Why?
Honestly, I work harder to make less than ever in appraisals. I don't do appraisal cruises or Las Vegas seminars, in my small business. After 18 years, this may be my final two year stint,[just renewed my license]l I am tired of the hassle, payment delays, revisions just to support quality assurance employee jobs.

Julia,

Homeputer does give you XML and ENV delivery. I think they're selling it for $99 special through the end of the month. At that price it's worth it just as a backup program

Just out of curiosity, there's a settlement conference for this case scheduled for November 10 of this year. Was that cancelled?

Have you updated recently? If you did you should notice this was already done. Download the latest version, build 242. It has an undefined expiration date. This should get you a bit further down the road. It will always work for non lender work, but eventually the form changes and other FNMA changes will make it obsolete.

I believe the .xlsx format is the new MS format. A few years ago they needed more money from their users so they changed formats. Since everyone insist on using MS products, they knew you would be happy to buy a newer version of Office.

I switched to OpenOffice years ago and switch again to LibreOffice about 2 years ago. LibreOffice will open the new Xcel format and all other common formats just fine. I had no problem opening the spreedsheet. If your Office suite can't open it, I would start looking at a newer office suite like LibreOffice.

If anyone ever comes across a link to the final case hearing, I would be interested in reading it.

I figured as much. I'll have to download Libre office, I guess. or buy Numbers at the Applestore.

There are all sorts of online case management databases, and the ones I've seen don't have the final resolution recorded yet. They all just show this upcoming settlement conference. That's why I was asking about it because it still appears to be an open case.

If the parties came to an agreement prior to then, then they could just show up on that date and have the case settled for good.

If we had every appraiser in the US using us, at $100 it still would be less than half the cost of operation -- and we'd be out of business too.

It's never easy.

I don't believe the cost factor quoted.

I do, however, believe it's easy. It can be done with a 99 cent app. Apple has done it thousands of time on things infinitely more complicated than just converting a file format. Teenage game app developers would laugh at how simple the process of converting to the env file format is. It's all two dimensional - no sound - no motion - it's just a printed report! It's all about making money off the customer.

As one common example - there is no reason Flash can't run on Android, but it doesn't - and it's not because of technical issues. It's marketing and ripping off the customer in the process.
