A cordless phone pack is the way to go for multiple extensions, but pay attention to the frequency of the phone. If you use WiFi you want to avoid using the same band.

I just now found a spot on the WWW with instructions for using VOIP phone with existing telephone wiring.
As author explains, it's dicey if you are also keeping your land-line active.

In any event - here is the LINK
.
.and here is a link to a much more detailed page LINK_2

I have one, it works, but they do not recommend it for faxing

I have used in in a variety of places and it works well over any connection. I have TimeWarner cable internet at home and the computer usually used for the MagicJack is connected via a wireless hub. I could not do that with Vonage VOIP service. I have successfully used it over the lowest cost AT&T dsl service (my parents house in Atlanta). I have also used it in a variety of public hotspots such as at Starbucks, Panara Bread, Caribou Coffee, several hotels and the public library.

hi coach,
please explain to me what type of phone you connect to the mj when you use it @ places such as starbucks.
do you know if the mj will work efficiently with a wireless internet card?
thanks for your help.

I use two different methods. Primarily I use a cheap, standard phone I got at Frys for under $10.00 alternatively I use ear buds with a microphone attached (using the software to dial.)

If you want to see what the phone I carry around in my bag looks like, just go into any Waffle House and look at their phone. :new_all_coholic:

I just ordered the MagicJack - going to try it at home - in these slow times, we're looking for ways to scale back some - probably should just go wireless and ditch the home phone, but for $19.95 a year, we'll try this first. I'm a little confused about the phone number you are assigned though - any input? Can we use our existing home phone number or do we have to get a new number? We have a four line phone at the office, so I don't think we'll change there yet - and yes, it's handy to have the four lines. We use MyFax.com for our fax and I suppose we could get rid of our dedicated fax line but that would require retraining our clients.

Okay any thoughts would be great.

It will assign you a local # with your area code and local pre-fix. You can't use your old #.

Thanks

I guess what I can do is have the phone company do the number referral for a couple of months. We rarely get phone calls at home - people usually call our cells phones - I guess I'm too old to think about going totally wireless - and when we built our house a couple of years ago we spent a fortune on the phone/internet wiring - so I feel like I need to use it! Seems silly now.... oh well..
