Probably the smartest thing we could do is encourage the Russians to invade thereby sucking them into another Afghanistan or something similar to the Israeli occupation of Lebanon. How long the Russian petro-economy would sustain an occupation like that is questionable. They might have waves of "Ukrainian suicide bombers" prowling the Moscow subway or even suffer an eventual Ukrainian "dirty bomb" attack as a reprisal. That would be most beneficial to the United States militarily however it will lead to a sad outcome for the portion of that country looking westward for help. Meanwhile there are three full NATO carrier battle groups exercising together in the Mediterranean. What do you think Trumps response to Vlad would've been?

I'm not surprised that France doesn't want any discussion about its colonial past being passed down to the next generation. The Germans and the Japanese would gladly vote their WWII atrocities out of children's textbooks as well. I didn't know gender politics was "a thing" in France however if some politician can make a headline over transsexual bathroom issues they seldom miss the opportunity and it just demonstrates what segment of the population they are making their pitch to (a.k.a. low class). I'm also not surprised that Macron is directly appealing to the portion of the French population concerned about "French values & identity" (a clearer "racist dog whistle" is hard to imagine) because right wing populism is unfortunately gaining traction in Europe.
