Went way over you head. Point being packaging and marketing (model home staging) is king and people are easily fooled. quality will take a back seat because people will pay a premium for a name brand that is associated with status.

Zackly... most homes are built of the same materials. So the "quality" is a function of the volume of materials and the care taken in putting it all together. And I see the same materials and workmanship in a wide range of homes that reflect substantial differences in cost and very little difference in quality. We have 2 builders locally that do a very good job for a reasonable fee and we have one that touts himself as the best, being a friend of Mike Huckabee etc, but frankly, if anything, the quality of his houses are lower than the others and he is using many of the same subcontractors around.

Example. We have a lot of slab construction. Most plumbers put thin copper tubing inside a plastic sleeve then pour the slab. The best plumbers use a thicker copper tubing and put in a thick foam tube that won't wear against the concrete. Jackhammering pipes out of the slab isn't cheap nor fun.
