Uprading from windows 10 to windows 11

If it does exactly what you want it to do, then it is not obsolete.
I understand completely. A Model T will also get you down the road but I'm not sure I'd want to drive one every day. I guess its like saying that burnt orange carpet and avocado appliances aren't obsolete. They both cover the floor and cook food.

Don't get me wrong, I'm the poster child for trying to make things last longer the most people. In my pole barn, I have a 34 yr. old lawn mower (JD316), a 32 yr. old 4-wheeler, another 29 yr. old 4-wheeler 4 WD, and a 24 yr. old GMC Sierra 1/2 ton, and I recently sold my 22 yr old Tahoe to a neighbor. I have a couple of jackets in the closet that are well over 30 years old.

Bought a pair of Bose noise cancelling headphones to use on the tractor and lawn mower. I can't download their latest app to my Iphone 7, apparently its too old. Luckily I found an older version of the app so I can Bluetooth the headphones to the Iphone. In reality, I'm only a semi-Luddite.

I wonder if suites like Total can run on Wine - anyone tried?

Tried it, but Total never ran right for me. To be honest, nothing I've used in WINE has worked very well so it could be something I'm doing wrong. not that I bother trying to figure it out as I will always look for a linux alternative. Pretty sure one of us linux users has done it successfully, but not sure who.

I use a W10 VM instead that has been flawless. Pulled the ISO direct from Microsoft and do a clean install so it's really been problem free. My theory is since Total is the only program I use on the windows side and do everything else on the linux side there's less chance for bloat and malware. I've had the same W10 vm since 2017 and have had ZERO issues. Still runs like a top.

Bluetooth the headphones
I really wish Apple or someone would come out with a better version of Bluetooth. It's one of those technologies that's highly useful but not quite reliable enough and maddening at times.

I'm sure they will....just a matter of time. Just like they slightly improved internet connectivity. I no longer have to put my phone into a special modem cradle to get connected.

Pretty soon they're all gonna have starlink built in.

Beat cha. My 2000 (early style) Chevy 3/4T is 25 now. My small Ford tractor is 46 years old, and I bought it new. My Kioti tractor is only 20 years old and has 1200 hours on it. The Ford has 1900 hours on it. But I used it yesterday to load a dead mower to go to the shop. Bought a new trailer last year after the one I had needed a new floor, and I decided it was too much work for this old man to replace the floorboards. I had done it before. My old farm wagon needs a new floor. It's a Montgomery Ward from the 1940s my grandad and dad bought. I have a Case plow from the 50s, my Bushhog 7' is 20, I bought at the same time as the Tractor. And I bought a bale trailer the same year. It's actually worth more now than when I bought it.

But Win 11 and almost all but degoogled phones, you are being tracked minute by minute, location by location, and targeted ads are waiting to pounce. As I said, Apple can track you even when you have the phone turned off. The minute I retire the phones are going south and I am getting a secured Brax phone. https://www.braxtech.net/

I also intend to operate basically on Linux.

Microsoft will no longer be supporting Windows 10 after Oct 25 and is offering a free upgrade to Windows 11- I believe my desktop; HP has the specs for it, but I do not want to download it to cause issues - has anybody upgraded to Windows 11 with the Microsoft free offer?
thanks
The newer Windows versions keep drawing you further in to the Microsoft Azure "ecosystem" - and that presents all kinds of new problems: It's often messy and time-consuming to deal with, especially if you have a larger system.

So, many people since about 2015 have been moving to Apple, in particular Apple "Silicon" with its "unified" or shared memory that is accessible by both the CPU and GPUs. So, if you have 256G of memory on an Apple Mac Studio M4, it will also be available to the GPUs for AI. On Windows, you will most likely have max 32G for your GPUs (e.g.on an Nvidia graphics card). That can be a very big difference. Plus, Apple is a vertical architecture, with highly integrated software drives and components. It is far more stable and secure than Windows systems. Also simpler, - yes simpler.

Yep, I went from Windows -> Mac -> Linux then back to Mac after their M silicon. It's really that good and the OS just works. I don't have time to fiddle with linux drivers and their terrible mobile battery consumption or the craziness of Windows updates (despite that platform having gotten much better over the years).

It's still unix and more importantly....NOT Microsoft

Well, I run the Mac Version of Office 365 Business on my Mac. That IS the one thing from Microsoft that is still good, --- except they sure try to get you to use an Azure login. - You can get around that though, with some effort. Not that I have to - I could move to Libre Office. But I have divested myself from Adobe.
