I took that one, too. Learned some things.

I like Calypso. They are a family owned business. They do indeed have some excellent courses. I, like many sometimes wait to long to complete the 21 hours for renewal. Procrastination. I don't mean to say I was late, no I was not sure I wanted to continue in this highly competitive environment. Fast N Cheap model has been ruinous to our residential side of the house. I simply can not compete with the majority of the hundreds of licensed res appraisers in the charlotte MSA.

So it was time for me to just retire. Once I get past june I will no longer be able to cally identify myself as an Appraiser. I also will not be bound by USPAP if I were to be a consultant. My Resume is enough. i,e I as a citizen can challenge zoning changes at the city & County. Would someone be willing to compensate me for my expert advice? Possibly.

Calypso has a very good selection. I started to do this one below and decided at the last minute to take it later. I do have the course manual in hard copy some where in my office. I really think a residential appraiser should start as soon as they can learning every thing you can around Green Energy Efficiency. I know of three high priced neighborhood's in charlotte that were all built to be very green energy efficient. that was ahile back and there may be more.

I've taken a few of their courses and have run into problems with the wording (and reasoning) in some of their instruction and testing, but I guess that's just the nature of online course formats. It's not that easy to write instructionals and questions where the correct answer is the only answer that always works or for which there are no common exceptions.

ASA is another good CE provider.
The best course I have taken ever, was a combination of AI, ASA, NAIFA, IAMA, ASFMRA, seminar in Denver. It was a series of valuation topics on valuing minerals, mines, etc. The audience was made up of some of the premier appraisers in resource valuations - from geothermal to quarries, mines, and oil wells, both domestically and internationally. Several things stood out. The 14-hour course was started at noon. That evening we had a big reception and dinner. The next day was 2 3-hour sessions and a luncheon speaker. Day 3 we finished up at noon. This more leisurely pace than packing in 7-hour days was much more relaxing and gave a lot of time for us to acquaint ourselves with some of the other students who had the specialized knowledge in our field. I learned far more than a simple cram it all in 2 days class.

Yeah. The all day sessions aren't good for actually learning anything. Unfortunately, a lot of appraisers only care about punching their CE ticket and a lot of providers only care about collecting the money.
