I make it a habit of always inspecting and measuring the exterior of singles and multi's first. Its just the way I do business. I want to make sure my floor plan is spot, note possible settlement areas once inside when observed on the exterior, division of units when its a multi and be able to ask questions about improvements when speaking with the home owner.

Today half way through the exterior inspection, the wife comes out and asks that I come inside and do the interior first. I explained that I need to finish taking measurements due to the number of jogs and cantilevers and that I would be another 10 minutes. She said "but cant you just do it after". I explained again that I could not. Then she says "but you're taking too long and we want to put the baby to sleep". The husband comes out and says "didn't the bank already give you a floor plan? don't you already have it". After being barraged by the wife and approached by the husband, followed by a short pause so I didn't misspeak, I answer him "no". He then actually mocks me in a condescending voice and asked if I "have a problem"! I couldn't believe it. At that point, I could only cancel the inspection and tell them they would receive a call from another appraiser. She even asked that I just continue. Unreal.

I bet that appraiser #2 receives a bit more respect! Good for you!

See my thread asking "how much rudeness will you tolerate?"
Sounds like today was zero! :)
Hell, you probably would have been done without the barrage of interruptions.

Never a need to be disrespected while doing our due diligence.

Sorry, I have to take the homeowners side on this one, all they ask you to do is the interior inspection first so they could put their baby down. Never forget it is their home, and we are guest. Seems to me they showed you the same amount of respect that you showed them, what goes around comes around.

A little bit off topic but I remember a few years ago when I would receive the condesending calls from Realtors. " We have to have the appraisal today! You MUST get it in NOW!"

My response. "I was trying to find some good market sales. The ones I have found so far will kill your deal dead as hell, but no problem....I can wrap it up and send it in this afternoon!" :D
Realtor: "NO NO....take your time.........we really are not in that big of a hurry!"

I dont follow the logic. We had a 1:00 appointment. I was on time. Their appointment with me starts with my inspection of the exterior of their dwelling. If it were a rectangle ranch, I may have accommodated. However it was a Victorian 2 family and my E&O.

Is that not why the appraiser set an appointment with these people? If it were the cable TV guy or the phone guy....they would work around the baby! You bet they would! :)

Do the measurements change with each minute? They would have been the same whether you measured them first or last. Seems to me you were being disrespectful to them with no need. Some requests from homeowners can not be accomadated, but this one easily could have been. Never forget, it is THEIR home and we should try to do our job and full inspection with as little intrusion as possible. If you treat homeowners like this the respect usually goes well in both directions.

Seriously, all they ask is for the appraiser to do the interior inspection first? Sometimes appraisers just need to get over themselves. If I were the lender, that would be the last assignment sent to that appraiser, the last thing they want is an appraiser disrespecting their clients at their own home.
