Walked away mid-inspection/vent

I still dont get it. I like doing the interior first. I feel I can get a good feel of the exterior better and in my opinion more accurate but thats me. I have run into dead spaces but that is from the inside when I can investigate and ask questions. Outside is a wall I cant open or look in. If there is a dead space I will find it inside because I do my best to make very accurate interior sketches. I measure the depth of a room next to another if i feel they may not be even etc. I still dont know how you would see this outside. If there is an accessory unit with a window why do you spot it at home and not there taking pictures. If it is odd when you are outside, knock and ask to come back in. If you find a hidden area outside what do you do then ask the wall to explain or ask the owner? The people have a baby, do you know if maybe they were up the entire night with a crying baby and now feel maybe the baby will sleep? I am not comfortable doing the outside first but when asked to I do it no matter how they ask. I used to get angry and confront them and yell back. That just makes things worse. Now I stay calm and polite no matter what they say in the end they usually feel stupid and apologize and have had good things to say about me afterwords even at first they hated me. My opinion it does not make you look professional. I am sure you disagree and I dont mean to say you are a bad appraiser by saying that just that it does not seem to be the best choice in the situation.

So this all starts out with the appraiser standing in the homeowner's yard measuring their property without an introduction? Who is in control here? No one. You can take control of the situation while still accommodating to the homeowners the minute you walk in the door and introduce yourself. The homeowner has no clue as to what you do or how you operate. If they had an appraisal done before, all they remember is how skippy did it. Do the interior and move to the exterior. Tell the owner you might have to go back in but you will try not to. It really is that simple.

I am amazed as well but then I thought the OP would get reamed by a few people and this thread would end. But the number of people standing up for his approach is what really makes me shake my head. Interesting psychology at work here, don't ya think?

Wrong. I already rang the door introduced myself and prior on the phone they were informed I would like to reserve a 45 minute block. They had any hour of the day to choose from. I did not suggest a nap hour inspection. Comprendo.

This post has turned a bit nasty...myself included. May be time to put this puppy to bed. But it shows how we all deal with the same types of *****hats no matter what part of the country.

I myself hate it when someone treats us like some kind of "indentured servant", but I do enjoy the fact that as a private business I can always decline an assignment if I want.

Tell me again. Who is in control here?....I still can't understand for the life of me how it escalates to you storming off without completing the inspection and you and the homeowners in a huff.
