HP 2000C - had it for 2 years, it's ok - but recently it's been acting up, so I think I'll be using my extended warranty - it seems like replacement time. Have only used HP over the last 20 years, but heard that the're selling to compaq - so will be watching.

PDF
Portable Document Format
The file format of documents viewed and created by the Adobe Acrobat Reader, Acrobat Capture, Adobe Distiller, Adobe Exchange, and the Adobe Acrobat Amber Plug-in for Netscape Navigator. This file format was developed in hopes to standardize formatting of documents that are used on the Internet. One of the benefits of using Acrobat and PDFs is that whether you're an executive using Microsoft® Office products, an engineer using a CAD program, or an art director using desktop publishing software, you can quickly deliver business documents to a colleague or to the entire company, without reauthoring or learning new applications.

OMG, don't tell me. Now I gotta run out and get something else to shove in this hyeah little puter??? An please don't tell me I gotta use navigator to send things PDF?? 8O

The faster I go, the further behind I get.

Adobe Acrobat is very easy to use, which creates the PDF's. I checked around, and found pricing from $200 -$250. I finally had my brother buy one for me, as he is Univ Prof and gets educational discounts. Only paid $58 plus shipping of $6.50. I guess there's a big markup in software. Explains why Microsoft makes $0.37 NET Profit for every $1.00 of revenue, even after all the bigwig's take their cut.

Good luck. Maybe a local schoolteacher could get the educational discount as well. The source was Academic Superstore, LLC, order tele is 800-737-6754, Austin, TX.

Any method of email that will handle attachments will take the PDF's. Just be careful of file size limitations. Yahoo is one of the restricted ones.

BTW, I use the Canon S630 for color printing. I was attracted to it because of the independent color cartridges. Don't have to throw them all away when one color runs dry. About $10.50 each. Black is bigger size and a tad bit more, maybe $12.

Our preference is for the HP 2000 or 2200 series deskjets. They can be converted accept bulk ink and are probably the cheapest in terms of both cost of equipment and cost of consumables. The 2000 are available on ebay in the $125 +/- and the 2200's $200+/-.

I would have to agree, the 2200 is the best choice for a small office. I use two printers, a series III laser for the forms and a 2000c for the photos. Sending reports electronic is really cutting down on my copies now too.

If you have a high volume then you might want to consider a color laser but they are pricey.

HOW!??? Do you not print one for files? Do you not allow other family to print? I must learn this trick.

<span style='color:brown'>Mell, sorry to not have followed this up. I use the same cartridges by refilling them. Unlike many of the HP's they do not "expire" Also my "file" copies are burned onto cd in pdf format......along with all supporting documents. Further, I am looking at doing "inspections" using a digital video camera that takes snapshots. If I am right, I can burn the video on the same cd......talk about a memory refresher down the road. I can picture an opposing attorney telling me I did not see something when I have video evidence.........and the digital video cameras have a 650 zoom or so for those comps that are a mile off the road and they only run about $300 bucks.</span>

Greg,
I'm intrigued by your use of a digital video camera.
Can you isolate individual "shots", i.e. front, rear, etc from the camera?
I really like the idea of retaining the photos for future reference, including the ones that don't make the "cut" into the appraisal report. Am currently using a Mavica and keeping the floppies in the individual files -- but, boy, a video camera! Whew!
Can you give me some details?
Nancy

<span style='color:brown'>Nancy, I am just now considering using a video camera. I am currently using a Toshiba still camera, but am wanting to replace it soon. The video cameras I have been looking at use both the memory stick and the digital tape media. Panasonic, Sony, and JVC seem to be the most prevalent ones in the price range I am considering ($275-$350). They all have about the same zoom capacity (around 650X......beats the heck out of the 2x and 3x still cameras have). The ones I have been looking at have a "snapshot" capacity, which allows you to take still pics although the still pics are not the mega pixel things that the newer still cameras take......but I use the 640 pixel setting anyway......just how fussy are the LO's about this sort of thing? Their printers can't print any more than 640 anyway.

The cables connect to the USB port on your computer where you can download both the still pics and the videos. I have recently installed a 40gig HD on my notebook, and will be upgrading the cd to a cdrw. This means a short (20 minute or so) video can be burned onto a cd (which holds between 650 and 750 meg........of course, if you end up with a 3 cd set for a file doesn't mean you have too much....it is still far less storage space than a legal file folder with an inch of notes....and I expect to have it all on just one cd) along with all the documents, notes, etc.

I think it would provide me with invaluable references should I have to "revisit" an old appraisal. Just like walking through it again, comments I made at the time, conditions as they are......foundations? use the stobe, zoom across the crawlspace at 600+x and you can probably tell from the outside if it is a termite tunnel or a shadow.......powerful referencing assistance. The size on these things are less than the Mavica, the media is reusable, ALL the data can be burned to CD. Downside? I don't know. I cannot think of one, batteries maybe......perhaps some of you can think of a downside.........if so, share. But remember I have a new grandson. I would LOVE to be able to take movies of him with a camera I just took a Section 179 deduction on  </span>

Greg,
I haven't checked the price of the camera lately, or the cost of the media, but Sony (I think) has a video camera that burns directly to a mini-CD. As I recall the CD can be read on any CD drive.
