What Is The Best House Outdoor Measuring Device?

there is no stick on my nose, lol. so if you have a 1 foot soffit and you have to stand under it and right next to the garage door how are you accurately finding you end spot? what i gathered when i had my lasers was a pythagorean function which was a chore and a cluster F. accompanied an appraiser friend on 1 inspection with his laser and could not measure it faster than a wheel. just my 2c.
/thread

just because you could not figure it out, or didn't want to invest the time to do so, does not mean it isn't possible. i already explained how to do it faster and more accurately with a laser vs a wheel. i can't help you anymore.

i shadowed someone who was proficient and took longer than i did with my wheel. what do you not understand? you couldnt even use a tape without, "wrestle with the hook" or "i have never once had to walk back 2-4 times to put the dumb end back on the house"

if you cant figure out how to use a tape or even a wheel accurately id certainly not want you using a laser, you might put your eye out! :rof:

my god your reading comprehension is horrible. have fun in 1978.

how do you accurately account for wall widths? 2x4 vs 2x6? osb plus fiberglasss rigid insulation? seems there are a few variables to account for where youd be guesstimating.
I always shot the Disto from one side to the other while inside, compare that with your outside dimension and voila! All the data you need and you could measure the whole shebang from the inside if you'd like.

don't be so silly DTB. it's much better to use a wheel and guesstimate the measurements in double to triple the time it takes to get measurements accurate to within 100th of an inch with a laser.

Two things come to mind, Sonny Corelone would still be around if he had used EZ Pass. Vic on the Soparanos would still be around if he had used a tape. The headphones didn't help matters. A wheel looks so undignified.

Is that the Long Island Crew from the Forum?

ive never heard of an appraiser measuring a house from the inside except for a condo or a very very rare circumstance. or--- what your saying is to be accurate you have to measure both inside and out? excuse me but that doesnt sound efficient.

so while im outside taking my exterior pics i just measure as i go and when i go inside the measuring is done.

In a 1.5-story home with sloped walls ANSI says you only count the area that is above 5'; that cannot be done from the exterior of the home.

I have a hard tie believing someone actually thinks a wheel can be as accurate as a laser or a tape. With the wheel you have to do a lot of rounding; I can think of multiple examples.

i know thats why i said in rare circumstances in my post above yours. i dont do a lot of cape cods at all. and my wheel has 1 inch increments, where is the rounding coming from? certainly no more than guessing how thick walls all when measured from the inside with a laser but i am happy your laser works so well for you.

when i started i used a wheel until i realized it measured different on wet grass verses dry grass, and differently going with, or against the grass. now, a laser for interior, beautiful for condos, and a tape for big home. use a nice thin long screw driver to sink into ground, a roach clip for carpets, an a bent L-shape, 4 inch, cotter pin for corners & new construction.
