What the heck is this about?

How's the humidity there? Are they opening the windows and letting it get pretty hot in the house and then closing it up again and running the A/C really cold? This absolutely will cause condensation throughout the HVAC system, including the ducts. Just one more thought. Mold samples and HVAC cleaning sounds like a must do. Finding out their A/C use habits could be the bottom line cause.

Are you sure the "Green Mold" on the porch columns isn't just moss or algea?

My old fuel oil furnace on my farm back in Kalamazoo got a stopped up chimney one year and we had the same thing. We noticed it sooner and a little quick investigation on my part turned up the old blocked chimney.

Remember that if the air is not going out the chimney, you have positive pressure inside of the house as the heated air expands and that air under pressure will find ways out of the house. If the air is warm and comes in contact with cooler outside are, you have condensation and when that evaporates, all that is left is the results of burning fuel oil. The green mold could also be due to the excess moist air being forced out,

I would advise the homeowner to have the heating system checked out first. That is the fastest and cheapest first option.

Humidity here stays aroung 70-80% all summer. I will inquire as to their a/c use habits & repost when I get an answer. I don't think the green mold on the porch columns is moss. It may be algae. I touched it (maybe a mistake) and it was like wet green latex paint. Washed right off. HVAC company is supposed to be there today for an inspection. Maybe they will have more information. Thanks.

Dave,

Did you ever ax about Kerosun/kerosene heaters?

Best answer will be from a licensed HVAC tech regarding the "air quality" being pumped out of the AC system; under present weather conditions across the country, I would expect some different happenings. Does the green slime - remain day & night :?: How old is the dwelling :?:

Green slime was there at 4:30 p.m. (time of inspection). The house is 17 years old, homeowner has been there for 14 years, and says all of this started two years ago.

David,

This is a tough one to explain. Please keep on keeping us up to date. I would like to know what is going on there.

Dave

started two years ago - hummmm; have you thought about getting hold of Dan Akroyd (ghost busters   ) couldn't resist.

ok - really, what kind of wood is (are) the column's made of :?:

if they are some kind of wood pressed together into cylinder form, perhaps a review of the glue content from the manufacturer will assist 8O
