Where are Vacation Homes Located in the US?

Most are not really vacation homes but people call their rentals vacation homes.

I could never get the math to work on a second non- full-time rental home. The only way it makes sense is if you live there at least 4 months of the year, really 6. Otherwise, it's way cheaper to just rent while on vacation plus you get way more flexibility.

And..... many of these Airbnb "vacation homes" are not even allowed to be operating due to zoning regulations or just an out and out ban on them.

The revelers who've come into residential neighborhoods and partied hard disregarding the other neighbors "right to quiet enjoyment" ruined a pretty neat idea. The reveler's entitled attitudes of "we paid for it so we can do whatever we want" have increased lawsuits and bans against Airbnb and Vrbo as cities implement stricter regulations on short-term rentals.

Lastly, they've gotten so expensive that the wife and I are primarily back to hotels.

The Math Never Works. My family owned a home in Lake Tahoe for 45 years and still one leased in Mexico which I can't give away because it's on a land lease.

RED ALERT JUST SAY NO TO VACATION HOMES or Boats or Motorhomes

It's all bull and as Uncle Billy used to say to me after his Third Trophy Wife Divorced him. Glenn it took me almost 65 years to wake up and realize that if you can F it or Sail it or fly it--then don't buy it and always rent or short term lease it. Lmao )

Financially doesn't make sense.
It would be more of a second home to move to a no tax income State.
I would save tens and tens of thousands of dollars to live 6 months plus 1 day on my second home.

I was surprised many years ago that my sister fell into buying a timeshare.
I remembered in my honeymoon, I signed up to hear a timeshare presentation to get a $100+ gift.
I can't believe my wife went along with that idea.
Anyway the salespeople knowing we were newlyweds left us alone from the hard sales pressured pitch. Also we didn't have much money back then.

It used to when you could buy a cabin on the lake for $20k. Hold for the long term. My folk's old cabin sold for $240k and then the new owners built a 8000 SF house on it. My outfitter cousin in CO had a quarter million invested in an 8-bedroom lodge he built and leased out to hunters and fishermen. Retired and sold for 10x his investment.

The second home market around here was dead until the pandemic. Everything doubled in price in two years and now it's just too expensive.
