Where Do These Cost Estimates Come From?

Are you putting up a foam water barrier between the tile and the drywall or floor and heated mats? I saw that on DIY or one of those stations recently and talked to a contractor I know about it. it seems to be the new "it" thing over cement board. It is lighter and cheaper and has some shock absorption. The only thing that scares me is the foam part. You would think that over the years it would deteriorate and cause movement.

Bathroom update.

I have remodeled a total of four bathrooms all stopping at the drywall. None had my assistance other than writing the check. Three were mid-range jobs with tile showers and dual flush toilets, Koehler fixtures and the like. One was higher end with a ridiculously high priced jacuzzi bubble tub. Cost complete with in floor heat has been from a low of right around $4,000 to a high of $15,000 but that included adding a massive window.

That $50,000 is nuts!

Update 2/19/13

The floor is ready for the sealant which will be a gloss. The tile my wife picked out looks like marble in a way. The heated floors are awesome; she has them set at 80. Brushed nickel shower door is installed and the tile around the existing tub is almost done.

Above you see the 10 foot wide mirror is gone. Somehow they got it out in one piece and are going to reuse it. We are keeping the cabinets. While they are 19 years old they are very high quality. To replace them with the same quality would be $4,000-$5,000. They will be restained after getting sanded down.

The closet is ready to be repainted and have the closet organizer system installed. My wife, the girls and I will be doing that over the weekend.

So far we have about $8,000 in the project. We have not yet ordered the new counter as we want to see how the cabinets turn out. We are getting quartz and the 10 foot counter with sinks and plumbing will be about $3,500.

It appears I will have a totally brand new 230 SF bathroom (keeping the old cabinets for right around $12,000. We didn't skimp on anything. The heated flooring with labor was about $1,600.
