Will There Be A Shortage Of Appraisers?

It has to be a local or regional question. I am sure there are places with both shortages and an over-supply. Just like houses.

In My are, I believe there is an over-supply but I also think there are jobs for EXCELLENT candidates. I will add a trainee in the next 12 months, regardless of my workflow. I just want o slow down a little and do someother things.

I teach pre-licensing classes from time to time and I alwys tell them the truth on the very first night. Over-supply in my area, low income for a few years, questionable long term future......greatest job in the world.

With the TWO TRAINEE RULE, I expect to see a drop in the number of folks (all levels) who renew or actually pass the state exam and get started.

I teach small classes (12 this time) and have several taking the classes with no intention of appraising, they just want to learn and be informed.

Personally, I am only 5'7" and I think it is discrimination to discuss the "shortage" of appraisers. :o

I think another thread could be started regarding WHO'S looking to get into the business.

The last USPAP class I attended contained a number of long haired-pony tail wearing males, and while they could change out of their Greatful Dead T-shirts, sandals & spiked belts I wonder how the average homeowner would feel about tatoos on the neck & 'sleeves!'

Call me ole fashioned, but I once had a homeowner (in a low rent district) complain about my $150 track suit & $125 tennis shoes. I wonder how they'd feel about being called Dude & hearing the word 'like' more than three times in a sentence.

I was in USPAP class a few weeks ago with 51 trainees taking it. I was amazed by the apperance of many and yet I was impressed by the knowledge and brightness of some others.

Dress like you want, talk like you want, cover your selves with tatoos, get all the body piercings you want....and then you can post on the forum bout how tough it is to find a mentor/supervisor.

If I can see a tatoo, piercing, your underwear...or anything else along those lines...don't watse your time with me. I will stand up for the right to be a moron and look like an idiot, but have no interest in being associated with one.

I forgot about the underwear! BUT, can we really call undergarments the size of a circus tent (& made of what appears to be canvas) on a 115 lb male...underwear?

If turning down the number of requests I git in a week is any indicator, I would have to say we are limited with the number of appraisers now.

I have recently decided to allow my son the opportunity to learn the bniz, with the thought that if he becomes Certified, he grow the busines the right way and not run a sweat shop; I can always work as a consultant for him, and if others in the family want to join in, it's an option. He would be the only Trainee, I would consider at this time. Some of the college gradjiates I've run into over the past few years leave a lot to be desired, mainly they think they kno everything (I always send em fer a bucket of steam, wit the caveat they can't come back empty handed)

Bob,

could not agree with you more.

I've seen some from a couple of local sweat shops that I seriously wouldn't want to let in if they came to my door and told me they were the appraiser.

Then again, there was a alcoholic/drug addict/convicted for theft/flunked rehab 4 times one that didn't 'look' bad and he was allowed to keep his license.
