Windows Tablets For Fieldwork

FWIW, there is a review of the Lenovo Miix 630 at the link below. From my perspective, it rings true - an adequate machine for lightweight use at a price below the Envy X2. Still, I'm more interested in the next generation devices which I believe will be a better bang for the buck.

Noted this little gem toward the bottom of the article - could be an important factor for some:
"Sprint in the US is also running a great deal with free LTE data through 2018 when you buy from Microsoft or Amazon."
Here is the link to that: https://www.sprint.com/en/shop/plans/2-in-1-always-connected.html

[Edit] Also noted this related article which mentions a discounted price.

Hope this helps!

FWIW, I am away from the office today, but will be there tomorrow.
Brian sent me an email to let me know that our "test bed" Surface Go arrived earlier today and that he is setting things up as appropriate.
We'll post on this once we have enough time with it to give initial impressions. Longer term test will, of course, take a little longer.

Minor Surface Go update. Yesterday, Brian was having Wi-Fi connection issues between the new SG and our internal router, even after doing the normal system setup/update.

I had Brian investigate further so we could try to determine whether the issue was the device, our internal system or an OS issue. The WiFi in Brian's area has never been spectacular and I was ready to cast stones toward our IT/Network guy. First step was to update the firmware, etc. for the old router - no joy :-\

Then we started trying other connections... He reported to me that he was successful in connecting to his phone and even a neighboring company's router, but not ours. Hmmm...

Turns out that I've been remiss in keeping certain equipment up to date. Our Network guy has been pestering me for quite a while to get an upgrade to their circa 2009 Netgear piece to something newer, but evidently I had been ignoring him... (Naturally, I'll blame our CFO for denying the purchase request, ha ha... Actually, I had already brought in my old (circa 2012) Netgear AC1900 "Nighthawk" piece but it had gotten misplaced when I moved from the front (business side) of the office back to the "dark side" (development dungeon), LOL…

Anyway once we upgraded to an even remotely contemporary router, we were up and running, no problems... My fault. No other issues so far :-)
Brian reports great performance on our own apps but we've not tested other software outside of MS stuff...
I've sent Brian some links to some "mini-reviews" on a few cases for the SG and we'll see which one(s) he wants to try out...
More reports as things develop...

FWIW, I'm posting a link (below) to a review which pretty much matches up with what we are finding. This may be especially interesting to folks who have had some experience with the old Surface 3 since it speaks directly to the massive improvements in performance. This quote from the article pretty much sums it up:

"Luckily, the new $399 Microsoft Surface Go not only does these things well — it exceeded my expectations for hardware. No, not everyone needs or wants a 10-inch PC, but if you are eyeing the Surface Go the performance jump between it and the Surface 3 (2015) is monumental. Microsoft has thought long and hard about how to get this device right, and the result is not only impressive, but it's downright fun."

Note that I only purchased the lowest end model with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage for testing purposes. I mostly try to get the lower performance models so I can set a sort of minimum performance expectation. Long time readers will also recall that I am consistent in my recommendations to stick with the "mid-tier" Core i5 instead of the higher performance Core i7 models in the full size Surface models.

In this case, however, I would recommend the mid or upper model which still uses the same CPU but adds a true SSD. The SSD is simply faster than eMMC and has twice the capacity. Note, though, that there are two models with an SSD - one has the same 4GB of RAM (which should be sufficient for normal mobile-type activities) whereas the other has 8 GB of RAM. The thing is, though, the one with 4GB of RAM and the 128 GB SSD is only available at Costco (for now?) Based on what I read, the Costco model runs the same price as the 8GB model, but it includes the basic keyboard cover, so you essentially trade 4GB of RAM for the black Type Cover...

I suspect most who purchase the Surface Go will just get the one which is more commonly available and justify the 8 GB of RAM. Also, I ordered the fancier $129 keyboard cover, but I would recommend getting the "plain" $99 black one and use the $30 savings on something like a big microSD card. As always, we highly recommend the accidental damage policy...

Brian will likely be getting a cover/case for our Surface Go soon and we'll report on that soon, as well.

Hope this was helpful!

Hi Randall,
Please let us know your impressions of the camera, and whether dual-monitor support is possible. Cheers.

SJA,

Keep in mind that, while the build quality is excellent, this is a lower-end & inexpensive mobile device and it is not meant to replace a desktop computer. So, I gotta ask why dual monitor support is an important factor to you. Regardless, please let me know the specs on your monitors so I can get you the most accurate and germane info (performance, connection issues, etc.)

That said, I can confirm that the $399 version can definitely work with dual monitors. As you can see in the picture below (courtesy of our Brian Marino), our unit is simultaneously powering the tablet screen + two external monitors. Me being me (and Brian being Brian, LOL), we went a little extreme in our tests. The table screen is running at 1,800 x 1,200 (2,160,000 pixels), the “smaller” monitor on the left is an older 30” Dell running at 2,560 x 1,600 (4,096,000 pixels) and the display on the right is last year’s TCL 49” UHD TV which is running at 3,840 x 2,160 (8,294,400 pixels.) Wow, that is a total of 14,550,400 pixels! Note that the TCL is being used as a monitor, not a TV since this is one of the less expensive TV’s that will run at full UHD (aka “4K” – sic) at 60Hz and supporting Chroma 4: 4: 4. In other words, it performs nicely as a computer monitor, unlike most other TV anywhere close to its current $299 price. [Edit] FWIW, Brian says that most folks prefer the $229 43" version for desktop use. The 2018 version runs $349...

Note that the device is simultaneously running 4 apps:
  • Our own MobileSketch 10 on the tablet screen,
  • MS Calendar app on the left side of the 30” screen,
  • Drawboard PDF on the right side of the 30” screen, and the
  • MS Edge Browser with 4 tabs open/running on the 49” screen

With respect to the camera, we’ve not taken any real estate pics yet. Brian says that the casual inside shots he has taken with the SG do not look as good as near-identical shots taken with his iPhone 8+, but then this tablet costs less than half of what his phone costs… Also, most phones today do a lot of post-processing to “amp up” shots, and I suspect that MS just doesn’t do as much post-processing since the camera is probably “tuned” more for document stuff. I expect that real estate shots, especially outdoor shots, will be more than adequate for the intended purpose, but I WILL do some camera testing as part of my typical “field testing” for outdoor screen performance/recommendations, etc. Below are reduced copies of quick shots I took of the Fire Department across the street from our office. I purposely positioned myself so the branch was in front of me to see if it would fool the autofocus on either devices. The images are unaltered except for being a quarter of their original size, due to upload restrictions on this site. I noted that on the original images, the SG image was smaller than the Android Phone image, and the aspect ratio is different. Like I said, I just snapped these very quickly. In the future, I will investigate the settings to see if I can get them closer to the typical phone settings. FWIW, the address and the signage text is a little more legible on the SG image and I expect it would be even better if I adjusted to get a higher resolution, lower compression, etc.

Noticed that Lenovo has announced their first device with the new SD850 (Yoga C630.) I'm not very interested in this particular device due to some design choices (size, weight, 16:9 screen, etc.), but the significance of their announcement is the new CPU which essentially promises a 30% performance boost, 3X AI boost and a 20% increase in battery life. I am expecting to start seeing announcements on their tablet and "convertible" type devices with the new CPU. Of course, a major bonus of this particular type of device is the availability of 4G LTE, which many of our customers desire or absolutely require.

Short note: MS is having an event on October 2nd, announced with an "A moment of your time" announcement...
With respect to this thread, it is my belief that we're likely to see an updated Surface Pro with the main features being 8th generation CPUs, USB-C, and 4G LTE.
I will, of course, report on this as soon as I have some verified info.

FWIW, I picked up a case with strap for our Surface Go - see the stock image included. I am also picking up another SG so that we can include one in the devices we take to the IAAO show next week. The one I am picking up today is the one with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD so I will be able to compare them side-by-side. I will also strive to get some field use pictures.
