Who is Danny Wiley?

My time on the ASB certainly did thicken my skin. I also become accustomed to folks not agreeing with me 100% of the time J. Unfortunately, I have also become accustomed to the proliferation of misinformation in the Internet age. Most of it is relatively harmless, but I did feel compelled to respond to a matter dealing with the integrity of the ASB – even if it was only provided via a link to another Forum.

On a more positive note, while I was on the ASB I had lots of interaction with people from AF. Postings on this Forum and comment letters to the ASB from people who participate here have had a dramatic effect on the ASB’s work. As many have observed, it is no coincidence that so many of the monthly Q&As over the past few years have dealt with issues that were hot buttons here. Thanks, and keep it up.

I am in the trenches. I understand well the frustrations of the typical appraiser, because I face them everyday. I also understand the anger. However, anyone with real interest in finding out about my involvement with Zaio could simply have emailed me. Many on this Forum will verify that I do respond to emails, and my email address can be found in about 10 seconds with a simple Google search. So there is no need for unfounded speculation.

Lastly, thanks to all who posted such nice comments. One of the great benefits of serving of the ASB was getting to meet so many of you personally. Brad, I was going to give up cigars because someone told me they would make me look like you, but then I realized we were already virtually twins, so quitting would do me no good.

I have contacted Danny a number of times regarding issues regarding appraisals as well as a number of USPAP clarifications. He has been nothing other than gracious and kind over the years and a real asset to the profession (as is anyone who kindly and thoughtfully answers well meaning questions). So happy to finally see you posting in the open Danny!

There are currently over 45 members of the IAC. All IAC members have equal rights.

The IAC is a council of The Appraisal Foundation, not a committe of the ASB. The IAC provides feedback to both the ASB and AQB, and much of it is very good. However, neither the ASB nor AQB is obliged to follow the advice of the IAC; they are only obliged to consider it. In my time of the ASB there were several proposals by the IAC that were not adopted by the ASB.

Who is Al Torres? How could he not know Danny Wiley Coyote? Danny has spent many years chasing a roadrunner in vain.

I am trying to track how much misinformation I have spread? Do they have statistics on this?

Tim, did you not get the memo!!! :rof: :rof:

"...determine Appraisal Standards, regulation and USPAP issues." is a bit much!
I am far and away NO expert on this topic, but from my experience the ASB is "influenced" by thoughtful and well-articulated thinking...and nothing more.

So, as to "determine"...I don't think so.

As to "influence"...IF the thinking is good! But, any single appraiser can have the same amount of "influence" if the appraiser presents a well-reasoned thought.

Just my $.02

Lee,

Having met Danny Wiley, and also the current Chair of the ASB as well as other members of the ASB, and knowing that they often struggle for months or maybe even a year or more over a single word of phrase(by their own admission), I don't believe that Zin or Zaio or anything in between, to the right of, or to the left of such entities will cause the ASB to act hurriedly to make any changes to USPAP. I also know that the ASB is very concerned that we all have the most up to date information relative to the standards. I will give you 2 examples:

1. The 2008 USPAP will have added to it the FAQ's(considered to be "other communications", and not part of the standards).

2. All AQB Certified USPAP Instructor Recertification courses have been temporarily cancelled until the ASB can make certain that all recertification courses match the new 2 year changes to USPAP.

Also, I have written to Danny as well as other members of the foundaion on a fairly regular basis over the years. I know of at least 2 FAQ's that came out of that. I also testified before the ASB several years ago concerning the wearing of "2 hats", broker and appraiser that led to clarification of when USPAP applies. Not just myself, but many others have done so and will continue to do so. If you want to make a difference, communicate with TAF and it's boards, as I am sure Lee that you do, and likely never mention or take credit for.

In my honest and very humble opinion I do not believe large corporations should be allowed to have a "KEY SEAT" on any foundation or board that directly affects their business model. It would seem to me there is a direct conflict of interest in this instance and it should be avoided at all costs.
Its a shame to see the "NEW KID" on the block having such a potential profound effect on all of us across the nation.
Thank you Mr Wiley for your very thoughtful posts and I hope you continue to do so. I also hope you take my comments with the respect in which I have intended them.
Thanks again.

I'm not sure if the "large corporations" you reference are large appraisal firms, large users of appraisal services, or something else.

IMO, it's not only appropriate for them to have a seat on an advisory board, but vital to the health of the profession. If we don't pay attention to what users of our services want, they'll simply go elsewhere to have their needs met. If we don't listen to what the providers of the service have to say, we run the risk of ignoring their needs.

As to the size of the corporation being the determinant as to participation, why? Are the concerns of a multi-million dollar corporation any more or less relevant than the concerns of a sole practitioner? Both should be welcomed and both should be encouraged to participate.

Happens on many standards boards. Take for example the ASTM. Who are they? Well, the ASTM is a 200 year old +- organization that writes standards of practice for virtually every product, technique, or service provided in this country. Their full name is The American Society of Testing & Materials. They wrote the standards of practice for Environmental Phase I and Phase II as well as the standard of practice for Environmental Screening. Who do you think serves on their various committees? I served on the E-50 Environmental committee for almost 10 years as a real estate and appraiser member. Others certainly have a vetsed interest in what the standards are that have a direct effect on their business models. So also the committees for all sorts of materials, medical equipment, service related standards, etc. If the primary goal of USPAP, line 168, page 6, 2006 USPAP is...."The purpose of the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice(USPAP) is to promote and maintain a high level of public trust in appraisal practice..........." Then why would not the public have a right to be involved?
