It depends. I at least inspect it from the street. I may say something quick, I may take from a distance, if the client requires a photo it will be from a distance or at least a photo of the street or street sign. I would tend to go for the option that is less likely to get the cops called on me or worse someone chasing me down.
Out of curiosity did you see a market reaction for the external behind the house?
Yep, always a good call, people might chase you down or report your license as a suspected pedo.

I have walked up to people many times and politely explained that I am an appraiser working on an appraisal in the neighborhood and if they mind if I take a picture of their house. It helps to have the comparable sale's MLS sheet and a business card as well as being incredibly charismatic. "How are you liking your new home" or reference their buyer's agent, "It looks like Jim Smith was your realtor, how was it working with him".
As a trainee, you need to do what your supervisory appraiser says to do. What I do is keep driving and use an MLS photo. The certification requires that you view the comparable from public streets. It does not require you to take a photo. Some Clients want original pics however, I've never had any pushback when using an MLS photo.... as long as the reason for using it is included in the report.
