Solar - Consumers are duped with zero down and 20 years of payments

How much will I save each month by putting solar panels on my roof? What’s the payback period for my system? How long is my lease?

The letters claim that multiple customers have signed zero-down solar leases without fully understanding the terms of their 20- to 30-year lease commitment, and are now having trouble selling their homes. They also reference class-action lawsuits brought against solar companies in California and Louisiana.

Since the letters were sent, solar industry leaders have been in discussions with the FTC and the CFPB, which recently led to the first set of national guidelines addressing interactions between solar companies and consumers.

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) released the Solar Business Code last week at the industry’s largest trade show. The code covers several aspects of the standard solar transaction, including guidance on system production calculations, consumer privacy, terms of solar contracts, and compliance with existing laws.

On the one hand, solar companies say it should be sufficient for them to self-regulate, because consumer protection is in their best interest -- they rely on good customer reviews and stable project portfolios to attract investors. SolarCity points to its A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau as proof of a strong track record.

On the other hand, critics say additional regulation is needed to prevent solar companies from making false claims in their marketing pitches, which put consumers at financial risk.

n February, Arizona State Sen. Debbie Lesko took action and filed legislation (SB 1465) to impose new rules on the solar industry. Lesko said that she and another legislator have received nearly 50 letters and dozens of phone calls this year from consumers who have complaints about their solar leases. The bill passed in July, and will come into effect on January 1, 2016.

The law requires solar companies to disclose the total cost of the solar array over the lifetime of the contract, which could be 20 years or more. It requires companies to identify all tax incentives and subsidies associated with the agreement. It also allows consumers to rescind the sale or lease within three days of signing a contract, among other things.

If you look closely, there’s one part of the planet that is bucking the trend. In the North Atlantic Ocean south of Greenland and Iceland, the ocean surface has seen very cold temperatures for the past eight months. What’s up with that?

The current is driven by differences in the temperature and salinity of ocean water (for a more thorough explanation, see here). In essence, cold salty water in the North Atlantic sinks because it is more dense, and warmer water from farther south moves northward to take its place, carrying tremendous heat energy along the way. But a large injection of cold, fresh water can, theoretically, mess it all up — preventing the sinking that would otherwise occur and, thus, weakening the circulation.

In the Nature Climate Change paper, the researchers suggested that this source of freshwater is the melting of Greenland, which is now losing more than a hundred billion tons of ice each year.

I also asked Rahmstorf whether, if his thinking is right, we should expect this cold patch to become a permanent feature of temperature maps, even as the world continues to warm. His answer was complex, but not anything that gives you much reassurance:

The short term variations will at some point also go the other way again, so I don’t expect the subpolar Atlantic to remain at record cold permanently. But I do expect the AMOC to decline further in the coming decades. The accelerated melting of the Greenland ice sheet will continue to contribute to this decline by diluting the ocean waters

Granted, it’s not clear that all climate scientists agree with this interpretation of what’s happening in the North Atlantic — but clearly some important ones do, and they have published their conclusions in an influential journal.

Thermohaline circulation

Thermohaline circulation (THC) is a part of the large-scale ocean circulation that is driven by global density gradients created by surface heat and freshwater fluxes.[1][2] The adjective thermohaline derives from thermo- referring to temperature and -haline referring to salt content, factors which together determine the density of sea water. Wind-driven surface currents (such as the Gulf Stream) travel polewards from the equatorial Atlantic Ocean, cooling en route, and eventually sinking at high latitudes (forming North Atlantic Deep Water). This dense water then flows into the ocean basins. While the bulk of it upwells in the Southern Ocean, the oldest waters (with a transit time of around 1000 years)[3] upwell in the North Pacific.[4] Extensive mixing therefore takes place between the ocean basins, reducing differences between them and making the Earth's oceans a global system. On their journey, the water masses transport both energy (in the form of heat) and matter (solids, dissolved substances and gases) around the globe. As such, the state of the circulation has a large impact on the climate of the Earth.

Effects on global climate

The thermohaline circulation plays an important role in supplying heat to the polar regions, and thus in regulating the amount of sea ice in these regions, although poleward heat transport outside the tropics is considerably larger in the atmosphere than in the ocean.[15] Changes in the thermohaline circulation are thought to have significant impacts on the Earth's radiation budget. Insofar as the thermohaline circulation governs the rate at which deep waters are exposed to the surface, it may also play an important role in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. While it is often stated that the thermohaline circulation is the primary reason that Western Europe is so temperate, it has been suggested that this is largely incorrect, and that Europe is warm mostly because it lies downwind of an ocean basin, and because of the effect of atmospheric waves bringing warm air north from the subtropics.[16] However, the underlying assumptions of this particular analysis have likewise been challenged.[17]

Large influxes of low-density meltwater from Lake Agassiz and deglaciation in North America are thought to have led to a shifting of deep water formation and subsidence in the extreme North Atlantic and caused the climate period in Europe known as the Younger Dryas.[18]

The Younger Dryas (YD) interval (stadial), also referred to as the Big Freeze, was an abrupt return to glacial-like conditions during the transition to a warmer, interglacial climate that occurred at the end of the Late Glacial interval. The Younger Dryas is the youngest, longest, and coldest of three stadials that resulted from typically abrupt climatic changes that took place over the last 16,000 calendar years.

In 2005, British researchers noticed that the net flow of the northern Gulf Stream had decreased by about 30% since 1957. Coincidentally, scientists at Woods Hole had been measuring the freshening of the North Atlantic as Earth becomes warmer. Their findings suggested that precipitation increases in the high northern latitudes, and polar ice melts as a consequence. By flooding the northern seas with lots of extra fresh water, global warming could, in theory, divert the Gulf Stream waters that usually flow northward, past the British Isles and Norway, and cause them to instead circulate toward the equator. If this were to happen, Europe's climate would be seriously impacted.[19][20][21]

Europe now joins US in breaking snow and cold records this winter

Severe winter weather has been causing chaos for many across parts of Europe.

Some parts of Sweden had the most snow in the last 50 years, Italy and Spain are among the countries that have seen arctic weather over the last few days.

Spanish police say they have rescued at least 220 people, including 100 from Britain, who were stuck in their cars in heavy snow in northern Spain.

Some had been stranded for up to 17 hours overnight, with temperatures falling as low as -15C (5F).

Many were going to Spain to escape the "cold". Spain hasn't seen so much snow for years.

In the beginning of January up to 15,000 motorists were stranded in heavy snow in the French Alps. Travellers reported gridlock on the roads and miles of tailbacks, forcing some to abandon their cars and seek emergency shelter.

Just today homes were buried as severe snow blasted Austria:

Austria is the latest country to feel the force of severe weather sweeping across Europe, in some parts whole houses have been buried under the snow. The Austrian Army have been brought in to cut down tree tops before they snap from the weight of the snow, they are also using helicopters to create downstream to remove snow from the trees to prevent them from snapping and blocking roads.

The outlook for Europe looks bleak, with more snow and heavy winds to come.

The US has fared no better this winter, just last week areas of the north-east US shut down as heavy snow fell across the entire region. More than 5000 flights were cancelled and over 2ft (60cm) of snow fell in some areas.

Winds of over 70 mph (112km/h) made the problem even worse. The national weather service has described the storm as " historic".

The blasts of cold air sent temperatures 10-35 degrees below average for early January, In November there were more than 350 record lows and record cool highs set, covering 42 states, the US.
In January Winter Storm Gorgon's arrival in the Midwest dropped around 2,000 square miles of snow. Last month parts of the US were colder than Mars!

And the harsh winter, we could be looking at cold temperatures humans shouldn't have to bear and probably never have before!

Pacific Islander who tried to become the world's first climate change refugee because rising sea levels will wipe out his homeland is deported from New Zealand after losing legal battle

New Zealand has deported a Pacific islander who launched a failed bid to become the world's first climate change refugee, it emerged today.

Ioane Teitiota was sent to back to his native Kiribati yesterday after exhausting all avenues in his four-year legal battle to stay in New Zealand, his supporters revealed.

The 39-year-old had argued that he should not be sent back to the island as rising sea levels threaten to deluge the nation of 100,000 people, making it unsafe for him and his family.

'What we've been doing is trying to save this family seeking asylum here in New Zealand because of a form of persecution by climate change,' he told Radio New Zealand.

'Going back to Kiribati, there is no life, there is no hope. We are sending back the children to a place that is not safe for them.'

Low-lying Kiribati suffers from a range of environmental problems that have been linked to climate change, including storm surges, flooding and water contamination.

The situation is so dire that Kiribati's government has bought 5,000 acres of land in Fiji to act as a farm for Kiribati if salt-water pollution means the former British colony can no longer produce crops.

Teitiota moved to New Zealand in 2007 and overstayed his visa, coming to the attention of police in 2011 over a minor traffic violation.

Earlier this year, New Zealand's Supreme Court acknowledged Kiribati faced challenges linked to climate change.

But it ruled Teitiota did not meet the legal definition of a refugee because he would not face persecution if he returned home.

Climate change: Get ready or get sued

On April 18, 2013, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn (D) declared a state of emergency after an epic deluge left much of the Chicago area under water.

“After several days of rain, an overnight deluge overwhelmed Chicago’s underground labyrinth of aging sewers and giant tunnels Thursday, forcing a noxious mix of sewage and stormwater into local waterways and Lake Michigan. The surge of murky, debris-strewn water so overloaded the system that sewage began to back up in basements and geysers of wastewater shot out of several sewer manholes,” the Chicago Tribune reported.

“The only way to get around is by kayak or canoe,” one resident told a local CBS affiliate. Major roads disappeared under water. Some residents had to evacuate their homes. A massive sinkhole swallowed three cars after the intense rain caused a water main to break.

“This is a new kind of storm associated with climate change,” Tom LaPorte, spokesman for the Chicago Department of Water Management, told Medill Reports on day two of the April flood. Extreme flooding is part of a pattern that has emerged in the last two decades, according to Illinois State climatologist Jim Angel.

Now a major insurance company is suing Chicago-area municipal governments saying they knew of the risks posed by climate change and should have been better prepared. The class-action lawsuits raise the question of who is liable for the costs of global warming.

Filed by Farmers Insurance Co. on behalf of itself, other insurance companies and customers whose property was damaged by the surge of storm water and sewage overflow, the lawsuits allege the governments of Chicago-area municipalities knew their drainage systems were inadequate and failed to take reasonable action to prevent flooding of insured properties.

During the past 40 years, climate change in Cook County has caused rains to be of greater volume, greater intensity and greater duration than pre-1970 rainfall history evidenced,” a fact that local governments were well aware of, a suit filed in Cook County, Ill., alleges, citing a climate change action plan adopted in 2008 that acknowledges the link between climate change and increased rainfall.

The suits also say the localities knew their drainage systems weren’t up to snuff because the regional water management authority had published plans in 2011 detailing various defects.

Knowing the risks, they argue, local governments should have increased their storm water storage capacity. Furthermore, the suits allege they were negligent in failing to take temporary measures in the days before the storm, such as deploying water-inflatable property protection systems to mitigate damage.

These lawsuits are the first of their kind, Michael Gerrard, director of the Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia Law School in New York, told Reuters. Gerrard said he expects to see more like them.

“I think what the insurers are saying is: ‘We’re in the business of covering unforeseen risks. Things that are basically accidents,’” Ceres insurance industry analyst Andrew Logan told NPR. “‘But we’re now at a point with the science where climate change is now a foreseeable risk.’”

The insurance companies are in for an uphill battle. Daniel Jasica of the State’s Attorney’s Office in Lake County, which is named in the Illinois state court suit, told Reuters that the localities will claim government immunity protects them from prosecution.

“Even if a city is likely to win a lawsuit, it still is going to have to spend quite a bit in defending itself,” Robert Verchick, who teaches environmental law at Loyola University in New Orleans, told NPR. “And it might just be better for everybody involved for cities to take climate change seriously.”

Environmental migrant refers to people who are forced to migrate from or flee their home region due to sudden or long-term changes to their local environment which compromise their well being or secure livelihood, such changes are held to include increased droughts, desertification,sea level rise, and disruption of seasonal weather patterns such as monsoons.[1] Environmental migrants may flee to or migrate to another country or they may migrate internally within their own country.[2] However, the term 'environmental migrant' is used somewhat interchangeably with a range of similar terms, such as 'environmental refugee', 'climate refugee', 'climate migrant', although the distinction between these terms is contested. Despite problems in formulating a uniform and clear-cut definition of 'environmental migration', such a concept has increased as an issue of concern in the 2000s as policy-makers, environmental and social scientists attempt to conceptualise the potential societal effects of climate change and general environmental degradation.

Will global warming cause more wars?

An article presented to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in 2009 determined that more wars will occur in Africa if global temperatures continue to rise.

The article was a collaboration between Marshall B. Burke and several other researchers. The presentation included results from the University of California Berkeley, New York University, Harvard University and Stanford University. It brought together expertise in the fields of economics, politics, applied sciences, and the environment.

Burke claims that the effort was the first comprehensive attempt to examine what impact climate change could have on armed conflict in sub-Saharan Africa (Africa). His team came to the alarming conclusion that almost 400,000 more people would die as a result of armed conflict in Africa by 2030 if global warming continues.

Burke arrived at this conclusion by analyzing how frequently civil war occurred in Africa during periods where global temperatures increased. He compared this with how often armed conflict arose during periods where temperatures were more stable. Assuming that everything else was constant, he found that there were more civil wars during periods where global warming occurred.

This seems to makes sense given that resources that are critical for survival will become scarcer if the temperatures in Africa increase. The result would be that those resources would become more valuable and the people that need them would be far more willing to fight for them.

It’s hard to know if Burke’s findings will hold up over time. The data we have available for changes in global temperatures spans a limited period of history and there are many other potential factors that could have led to more wars in Africa during the times he analyzed.

At the very least, the report is a great attempt to quantify the impact of climate change. It makes it far easier for people to understand. Hopefully, that understanding will cause more people to want to stop global warming.

Global Warming Could Lead to Worldwide Wars

It would be a simplification to assert that the mass movement of refugees to Europe is currently primarily caused by global warming. As we've noted previously, wars of empire and economic deprivation have been the leading factors behind the recent surge of people struggling to reach the relative safety and economic stability of European Union nations.

However, a September 9 article in the Guardian reports on the warning issued by the former head of Britain's Liberal Democrats, Lord Paddy Ashdown, that "the world will undergo more resource wars and huge movements of desperate people unless it tackles climate change effectively."

Ashdown's warning is based on both logical and scientific premises. If global warming damages or destroys the yield of large areas of agricultural production, for example, there will be likely be wars fought over an increasing limited availability of food. In addition, deadly conflicts would also result from a decreasing supply of fresh water.

Indeed, the US Defense Department appears to agree with Ashdown, according to a report it issued in 2014, as reported in Responding to Climate Change:

US military chiefs have warned climate change is becoming an increasing risk to global security, providing further pause for thought among the Washington political establishment sharply divided on how to tackle global warming.

In a report published every four years that outlines future threats to the US military’s interests and potential global flashpoints, the Pentagon said climate change is a "threat multiplier" and would be a major area of future defense strategy.

"The pressures caused by climate change will influence resource competition while placing additional burdens on economies, societies, and governance institutions around the world," said the report, which was published earlier this week.

Such wars would be over the very basic issue of who shall live and who shall die - based on who secures access to supplies of food and drinkable water. These conflicts could, in theory, lead to military attacks that are aimed at annihilating whole populations who are competing for the most basic necessities of sustaining life.

Lord Ashdown believes that a "vast humanitarian disaster ... will soon unfold," according to the Guardian:

"I raised it to make the problem more obvious," [Ashdown explained,] "though I do not know why politicians continue to be so blind to it."

He said evidence of the impacts of climate change was plain to see: "You need only to fly over some of the areas that are being affected – like the Naga Hills on the border of India and Burma, or vast areas of the Ganges delta – to see clearly what’s happening."

Tahmima Anam, a Bangladeshi writer and novelist, says that 50,000 people migrate every month to Dhaka, the capital city, because rising sea levels are making their villages uninhabitable and their arable land impossible to cultivate....

Ashdown said: "If governments do not act, then wars over land and resources... will become more common."

Study: Global warming, evolution are clipping bees' tongues

WASHINGTON (AP) — Global warming and evolution are reshaping the bodies of some American bumblebees, a new study finds.

The tongues of two Rocky Mountains species of bumblebees are about one-quarter shorter than they were 40 years ago, evolving that way because climate change altered the buffet of wildflowers they normally feed from, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Science.

In one of these species, the tongue had been half the size of the bee's body — the equivalent of a human tongue going down to the waist. But because the flowers where the long tongue is required have dwindled, the bees didn't need that much tongue. Keeping long tongues requires bees use more energy, so the bees evolved a shorter tongue that allows them to sample a wider variety of flowers, said study lead author Nicole Miller-Struttmann at the State University of New York, Old Westbury.

While biologists have tracked how global warming has altered the developmental, migration, timing and other behavior in plants and animals, what makes this study unusual is the physical changes in the bees, said study co-author Candace Galen at the University of Missouri.

"It speaks to the magnitude of the change of the climate that it's affecting the evolution of the organisms," Galen said. "It's a beautiful demonstration of adaptive evolution."

Sydney Cameron at the University of Illinois wasn't part of the study, but praised it as well conducted and significant for the ecosystem of mountain flowers.

The team of biologists studied the bees on three isolated mountaintops in the Rockies, where they had been the most dominant species around. Not so much anymore, Miller-Struttmann said. The longer tongued of the two bees, the golden belted bumblebee, shrank from 50 percent of all the bees to 20 percent, she said.

Because these were so isolated and so high — more than 10,000 feet — pesticides and pathogens, often blamed for bee declines, weren't a problem, the scientists said. Something else had to be an issue. They compared the bees to those of 40 years ago or more and found the tongues dramatically shorter.

They also found that the temperature in the area had warmed by about 3.6 degrees since the 1960s and the type and amount of flowers had changed.

At first, the scientists figured the flowers were evolving with the bees, as often happens over long time periods in nature, but Miller-Struttmann said that's not the case.

"The silver lining is that (the bees) are evolving very quickly," Miller-Struttmann said. "The story may not be as rosy for the flowers."

Galen worries that without long-tongued bees, some flowers will falter. Also, she said shorter tongue bees often "cheat" and bite a hole in the flower's side, which doesn't help the plant spread its seeds.

So, if a bee pokes a hole in the side of a pedal to suck the nectar and pollinate the flower, that hole causes a seed dispersion issue how?????
