Recipient of the 2018 AppraiserFest Life Time Achievement Award, Pat Turner. IMO, this is our last hope of salvaging any part of the appraisal profession as we know it, in addition to improving the regulatory oversight of our industr and enhancing the public trust. Please take a few minutes and listen to this podcast, and write a letter of recommendation to the Appraisal Foundation in support of Pat Turner’s appointment to the ASB. He has some spectacular ideas on how to fix a broken system. Also pay attention as to how one state complaint can put an appraiser out of business because it compromises their ability to procure E&O insurance. Arika@AppraisalFoundation.org.

Here is my email:

“To whom it may concern:

This email is in support of Pat Turner for the ASB. His focus on consumer protection and public trust is my primary reasons”.

Ok, I know I could have done better but do it.

Their reply: “Thanks!”

@Pittsburgh Pete will say you should have used “are” instead of “is”. I know. Lol

It is debatable though. Lol

You didn't even get a "you" in the "Thanks?"

Ima get a ton of hate for this but I'm going to run my mouth anyway because this forum is going to look like idiots if we let these ideas pass without challenge.

I highly disappointed that there are still appraisers out there - after all these many years and after all those USPAP courses that they take every 2 years - who actually think TAF is about anything other than appraiser qualifications and appraisal standards and (to a lesser degree) the functional elements of appraising. It's even more disappointing that people might think the ASB (in particular) is about anything other than the material in USPAP. Whoever these two have been taking their USPAP courses from have apparently been slacking, and that's another disappointment.

The fundamental lesson of the AQBs USPAP Instructor Course is that instructors need to stick to the script and to not inject into the instruction elements which are not there. That's an *explicit* violation of the contracts they sign for which they can lose their certifications to teach those courses. It's also a violation of the ETHICS RULE, because teaching appraisal courses is considered an element of appraisal practice as defined. This will go double for the ASB members as they promulgate USPAP. Apart from providing instruction to the state boards on what USPAP is/isn't it's none of the ASBs business how these boards conduct their affairs. It says so right in the book:

"USPAP does not establish who or which assignments must comply. Neither The Appraisal Foundation nor its Appraisal Standards Board is a government entity with the power to make, judge, or enforce law."

There's nowhere in USPAP that makes any reference to licensing or state boards or discipline protocols or E&O or anything even remotely related to those topics. If either of these two knew what they were talking about in terms of the material they'd know this much because it's basic. Basic.

If you guys want Mr Turner's application to go anywhere then the best note you could send would be to Phil to persuade him to pull this episode of his podcast before the Board of Trustees at TAF sees it; because if they see it then that will be it for Mr Turner's application. Being incompetent with the material is not a good look.

I am impressed that you made it that far. Want to talk about basic? The 10th time that they misstated what the letters "ASB" actually stand for I finally laughed out loud. You would think that is a detail that they would get correct in a campaign for an ASB position :) Just syain'

yawn, yawn, giggles. the private email forums must be (blowing) up.
