Appraisal Institute Accused of Covering Up Sexual Harassment and Test Flaws

Where would you recommend?
Do you have less experience if you stop paying dues? You still have the education. What would you do if there wasn't a corrupt org you could pay dues to to say you are better.

Had an appraisal given to me by an agent for a pre-listing. Guy with supposedly 40 years experience SRA and other titles, long CV. Comps except for one (that was actually a good comp) were over double the GLA, adjusted $20 Sq.Ft. and of course the good comp adjusted much lower than the other cherry picked comps. Of course the agent thought it was a great appraisal and I'm just some dummy without an SRA who can't understand the genius of it. And yes there were good comps available on that effective date as I appraised the property not long after it.

Maybe if I pay my dues to AI I can be a super genius appraiser too.

You changed the topic. You had stated:
"You can get the highest level of education without going through AI or Harvey Weinstein." I got my education from the Appraisal Institute, and I thought the classes and access to professionals was excellent. The dues are separate from the education; you can take the classes and get state licensed without becoming a member. Some of the best appraisers I know got their education from the Appraisal Institute so I think they are a reasonable avenue to success as an appraiser. There are other places to get education but AI provides access to local chapters which connects you to other professionals. The organization still has value to me and I'm choosing to stick with them. Dropping out of AI because of the allegations related to Steinley would be like not watching movies because of Weinstein. I'm still going to watch movies.

Rumors are that Steinley has been "removed" by the Board. No official indication yet as to what that means.

Anything other than a removal from all positions with a move to strip his designations is unacceptable. Even if that happens it would only be a first step in the house cleaning needed and a multi-year restructure. My cult dues are paid through the end of the year, while I'm sure I'll still be on the membership rolls in 2026 (typical cult behavior) at least my money won't support the debauchery in Chicago.

I think the whole executive board needs to be removed. They had to have been complicit in getting Steinley nominated and elected while knowing his behavior and its prior cost.

I agree. They knew what the lawsuit was going to allege way back in December when they were served notice. Not to mention the $400k settlement was paid out a year ago and the lawsuit alleging harassment and test score manipulation was filed a few months ago. No excuse to take this long to react.
