Are they really stealing our sketchs?

Your sketch is your sketch. It is just like a painter or a photographer. It is considered to be a work or art. It is your interpretation of what was there. No two people will draw a sketch the exact same way. Therefore, the sketch is copywrited when you put it on paper or in some form such as pdf. No one has the right to use the sketch for any other purpose than what you gave permission to use it for. to use it any other way would be a copyright infringement. I hope my spelling is ok. It is really late.

I thought the distance between two points was a fact, not a "work or art" which requires "interpretation". I really don't think a sketch by itself is an original work. The architectural plans for the house usually are, but I don't think a sketch of the finished product would pass muster.

Besides, they ain't worth much if anything. I would not trust anyone's sketch but my own. Mine are not a work of art, but they are accurate.

Don't drink the water Brad is offering you on this...I don't buy that for a second. They do mine them, all the time. Why not? do you think they just read the bottom of page 2 and throw them away? Hell no. They paid for it, it's theirs, they can do what they want with them.

We have heard of these shenanigans for a few years now- almost every time, Brad posts for someone to show him proof... I don't think anyone has. Must be in that black helicopter circling above..

And like Bama said, why would they want to use it?

I, too, take great pride in my sketches. Besides drawing the living area and basement, I include all porches, patios, decks, detached garages and any other outbuilding that has value. I make them as large as I can and use a good sized font for the dimensions. Simple houses fit on one page but I've used as many as three.

Going against the grain here, (and since I have no secondary market for my sketch) I have no problem with it being used for any other purpose. Many times during the inspection the homeowner will ask how big the home is. I tell them I take my hand sketch and draw it on a CAD/CAM system on my computer at the office so I won't know right now. I then tell them they should request a copy of the appraisal and it will be in my report.

Al Qaeda has your sketches, for the next attack.

Do you put toilets on your sketches?

My experience in the AVM industry (SiteX, Countrywide, First American, Comps Inc.) seems to match what Bama and Brad are saying. The AVMs are built on public record data and there is no reason to mine appraisal reports for more data.

The one company that does mine appraisal data is FNC, but they don't produce an AVM. I doubt that the AVM makers are buying their data, either.

With all of the real attacks on the appraisal profession going on today, why waste our efforts pursuing the AVM bogeyman?

This is an old conspiracy theory that has been going on for about twenty years. The AVM vendors do not want or need data from your appraisal reports.

We used to laugh when people would ask us if we were mining appraisal reports.

Glad to hear it from an expert.

I never did believe the old "data mining" crap that seems to flourish on this board. I use Realquest for plat maps and every now and then I have to run the legal through them. They are almost 100% verbatim what the local county has.

Do you put toilets on your sketches?
No. Nor do I draw interior walls unless I need to show functional inadequacies. I do put in symbols for fireplaces and stairs with arrows showing direction. Basically I do all that is required for a good overview of the amenities and that gives me the square footages for a cost approach.

Good thing, Al Queda wants full floor plans. Beware vendors asking for or encouraging interior wall locations.
