I've had one client actually request an authorization for them to pull my MARI Midex before doing business. If you aren't familiar with what that is, it's nothing to be ashamed of; I honestly didn't even know what it actually was until the request came about.

My main concern of the usage of MARI's research, is that I've read claims of it being completely innacurate at times... and then it's similar to getting a resolution from an improper recording to a credit bureau, regardless how frivilous the reported claim is.

I have done it before for two different clients. One a relocation client and another that does loans for military employees. I didn't care for it at first but I changed my mind after I thought about it. I now wish everyone would run a background check on every appraiser they hire. First of all from the homeowner's POV, I dont just let anyone come into my home. Second from the lender's POV, the lender has the liability of sending that person into someone's home. If I remember correctly I think I paid for one of the background checks as well. I have paid a lot more to get a client. AMCs part of my fee, Appraiser a split fee, Directorys for ... well nothing I guess. If it would get me another GOOD client I would pay for it and more. The only advice I would give is check out the client first before giving any confidential info. I was talking with some guys the other day about taking a drug test. I seems they had to take a drug test just to enter into and work for a large paper mill. They were subcontractors but the were not let on the grounds of the plant until they passed the test. I would take a drug test for a good client as well. I think background checks and drug test are just as important as sample appraisals, E&O Ins. Cert., and copies of your license.

To me it would depend on the arrangement I guess.

If they contract a reputable 3rd party who will do the investigation and then report a simple "thumbs up/thumbs down" to the prospective client that would be an acceptable arrangement.

If I was expected to fill out a long detailed questionnaire to be submitted to the prospective client and then they'd contract for the info and get all the raw data themselves, that would be another, unacceptable, thing.

They already do a background check in Texas when you get your license so no thanks if I am an employee and they are paying my SS taxes then maybe I would think about it, but I can't see that happening...............
