California (Maybe) Dreaming

I'm still looking for someplace in CA cool & rainy to move to, where the cost of living is reasonable and the volume of appraisal work is strong....been in the mid-90's here in Riverside all week although it's only early April. Three hours at mid-day yesterday on an estate assignment with four dwelling units, a $200K pool, etc. Almost literally passed out it was so hot.

Dont worry it will only get worse :)

Your best option is just to leave CALI - I understand what o ant but I do not think its available anymore unless you have lots and lots of money :)

Wrightwood is at the 5900ft elevation and the highs didn't break 100* during the summer of 2021. Some days didn't get over 90%. Low humidity. Due to the elevation the overnight lows were 25* lower than that. That means the heat of the day passes at about 3PM. Median price for the last 6 months was $410k, there being 17 sales under $300k. You would have easy access to the entire Mojave Desert region was well as reasonable proximity to the I-10 corridor areas in the IE.

Wrightwood would be a heck of a lot better than the Arrowhead- Big Bear mountains, but I grew up in West Virginia and don't want to ever live in the forest again. Looking for a big city with small town charm, and lots of rain.

Compton or Watts is really nice as long as you carry several guns and knives 100% of every second of everyday. San Francisco has the lowest cost of living anywhere in California as long as you are a professional stick & ball player of one sport or another. Bakersfield has the best weather as long as you are a snake or a lizzard.
My thought is that what you describe does not exist anywhere in California anymore. I know where we live the average cost of a single family home is now $1.95 million and that gets you a very basic POS home. Gasoline is $7.00/gallon. AMC's offer $350-$450 for homes that sell for $5M and have 5,000 square feet.

Agree with Brit-hate to be so negative but unless somoen is wealthy or owned the property for many years not too-many places that a single guy could go to in CALI.

Sorry, but you don't know what hot and miserable is. I just checked the weather in Riverside...humidity 54% LOL.
Tell you what, this July come on out here and you can come along on some inspections... 90-95+ degrees, Dew point close to 70 and humidity 80%+. You'll pine for that CA weather LOL. When I lived in FL back in the '70's I met a Marine that had been all over the world. We got to talking about the heat and he said the most miserable place he had ever been was Quantico VA...right up the road from me.

I hear Houston is worse for humidity. I don't believe it.

Compared to low cost States Compton's housing expenses are 62% higher than the national average and the utility prices are 8% higher than the national average. Transportation expenses like bus fares and gas prices are 31% higher than the national average.
