Drone rangers slap Realtors with subpoenas

So much for sub surface and air space rights. Coming to state and federal court near you.

Wow. Joyce, with the legal power.

Great concept to explore.

What is, or is there; a certain air space distance which residents claim?

What's next? Tech worms which tunnel up and look at you from the ground?

Little flying dragon flies with cameras, which launch off of the parent drone, and scan everything?

You've got to see the bigger picture, so you can be properly scared about the future of these technologies.

There is nothing cool about drones. Unless they're like medical workers in outbreak scenarios or something. Maybe surveyors for outside of skyscrapers. Spy drones seem to be the word of the day. They're distinctly different from robotics as we've come to know them, because they are used as tools of oppression, not societal benefit.

I'm going to make a drone with a ready made emp blaster. It will fly fully automated, seeking the skies for other drones.

Careful about the tin hat comments... Rex uses his on nights of a full moon from the roof of his manse.

how about,

skyscraper window washer supervisor, employee performance tools.

hey you missed the 6th window on the west side of floor 12 and there is a giant bird dropping on the 2nd window of floor 14.

Don't make me fly this thing up to the 15th floor to check your work up there.

Specifically, the Federal Aviation Act provides that: "The United States Government has exclusive sovereignty of airspace of the United States."[2] The act defines navigable airspace as "airspace above the minimum altitudes of flight…including airspace needed to ensure the safety in the takeoff and landing of aircraft."[3]

Property owners may waive (or purchasers may be required to waive) any putative notion of "air rights" near an airport, for convenience in future real estate transactions, and to avoid lawsuits from future owners who might attempt to claim distress from overflying aircraft. This is called a navigation easement.

You're the high flying fish, why don't you educate us?

This will be fought out in the courts, and challenging appraisers to be experts in air rights aside, the concept of air rights, public access and use of open area around houses will be ruled on. An owner does own air rights around their properties, typically equal to the building height but could be several stories above. In urban areas, air rights above buildings are very valuable and sold and traded for right to build up. (or nor not build in order to keep an open view, for example)

I do not claim to be an expert in air rights, ownership space expected around a property, trespassing rights, rights to privacy etc but common sense indicates that drones flying around by anybody or everybody whether for personal or light commercial/business use will not be allowed, their use will be restricted to govt, military, perhaps special circumstance law enforcement . Satellite images on google are taken with permitted aircraft or satellites flying above a legal altitude for them and their use is controlled and licensed as are cell phone towers .

There is so much potential for criminal activity, terrorist activity, or just plain nuisance use along with loss of privacy as well as safety issues and the issues of trespassing on air rights above/round buildings that expectations of drones becoming widespread is ludicrous.

Couple of things:

The FAA is now asserting the right to control all drones, not just for commercial use. That would put hobbyists under its jurisdiction. But given the number of drones vs enforcement officials, this will be a losing proposition.

Recently, a drone enthusiast in Arlington, TX flew a drone around the Cowboys stadium. Lost control when he got too low, drone crashed on the top of the stadium. He was able to locate it, and the staff recovered it, but is in trouble with the FAA.

One lady found a drone hovering outside her window (26th floor condo).

Have seen drones taking live video of police activities in stand offs, etc, being transmitted back to TV stations.

And if his drone had hit top of stadium and dislodged a fixture and that fell on a fan and inured or killed them and they/their family sued the stadium, the owner of drone would be facing criminal charges and opened to suit from the stadium. let alone if it had interfered with an aircraft....
Folks will have to find other ways to entertain themselves; flying drones for sport or to save time/$ for business obligations is not gonna happen. People feel they are entitled to every new technological wonder no matter what the consequences. Our greed and disregard for others is endless, it seems.

What ever happens it will be interesting. But I am not certain taking photos curbs side via drones has any more or less safety issue than driving over and shooting a photo. Cars slam through houses at least once a week if not more in Chicago. I can not imagine a drone doing more damage than that.
