"Inflation is coming down"

I have wondered, but never made the commitment. However, we raised chickens and turkeys when I was a kid and I haven't had a truly edible bird since I left home. I'm thinking I'll raise my own again starting in the spring.
Plan to start quail farming next spring as well. Don't hunt any more - can't keep up with bird dogs any longer - but still love 'em.

That is a larger practice than I ever understood. I thought most were raised for release in hunting areas. Might have to add a few to the mix to try them out.

Yeah - I did a few hunts where we were hunting raised birds - not as much fun as wild birds, but... supposedly they're easy to raise, fast growth rates, more eggs (even though they're smaller), and not as much poop (as compared to other fowl). Plan on building about a ~ 20' x 20' x 10' pen and starting off with 15-20 birds.

Probably hardier than most chickens. The chicken thing is kind of a sad state of affairs. Many grow Cornish cross birds because they grow fast and convert feed to meat more efficiently than others. That is what we raised at home, and they were pretty hardy years ago. Now, they have been bred to grow so fast that they are unhealthy and start dropping dead of heart failure after about 8 weeks (good Americans, I guess). The heritage breeds supposedly are healthier and taste better but take longer to grow and have lower feed conversion.

If you have a lot of vegetable dishes, then probably can feed 10 people with $58.

Did them our first year and never again. Too fragile of a breed. Tried Red Rangers after that and they were better, but smaller. Now we just cull our layers for meat

The best breakfast in the world is a half dozen fresh quail.
