January business?

The low rates hit us, in Illinois immediately. First week of this month we got 47 orders (nice thing was about 10-12 were previously done). That includes a few exterior only. That was the most so far, 20-30 each week after. I got a call today, rates are really low and I was told not to expect any sleep for a while. I was not getting any anyway. My kids wonder who I am when they see me. I was really hoping to take it easy for a few weeks. That won’t be happening.
Spoke with another appraiser I know and they are getting swamped as well.

Wow...really??? Most of the prazers I know in two states cannot make a living doing this any more....

some of you are just pathetic

it never ceases to amaze me how a couple of appraisers mention how well they are doing and the rest just shoot them down as being incompetant, unethical or even being a "skippy". even going as far as breakig out their calcualtor to "break down" how many they are doing an hour. EACH MARKET AND APPRAISAL IS DIFFERENT!! get a life!!

is this forum not provide for us to band together and help each other? seriously, it is complete GARBAGE that some of you are so insecure that you find it completely unfathomable that someone is smarter, faster and more driven than you??

imo, its the older generation that are the first to "assault" an appraiser that is doing well and performing above the "norm". this is EXTREMELY unfortunate, as they are the very reason many of us are here (seeking knowledge). you guys need to face it, the younger generation is faster and more efficient these days... period! now of course, not necessarily smarter or better... but definately more efficient (wink).

we currently have major issues that are facing our profession... is it really worth the effort to try and beat down our own? im glad people are doing well even if its not me. it gives me hope!

I do not know you, therefore I have no need to impress you. I answered the original posters question as to appraisal volume. I am sure there are others who are just as busy, if not more. Believe what you will, it does not matter to me.

Gee Mr. Allen care to let us newbies know how long you been appraising?

Better yet, how long have you been licensed and living in the Saint George area?

You say only about 7-9 full time appraisers in the area?

The MLS had how many total sales in the last 30 days in Washington County? FWIW I have access to the same MLS system.:new_smile-l:

Just a few questions that won't get answered!:new_multi:

As if anybody cares except for the 'top booker' story....
as I told the Dish installer yesterday, biz is down
75%. So I'm enjoying the deep freeze, just about
to leave for island vacation....then today its 4 new ones.
Apparently the low interest rate environment has perked
up the refi market. Looks like an election year and
they'll re-flate the economy, otherwise the serfs will
storm the castle.

Chris, what's wrong with you man. Get with the plan.

I didn’t post to brag or anything, I would think most appraisers with 3 or more clients are getting a good amount of work. There are times when I get half of the work I get the month before.
I really don’t think what I said I got so far is out really odd. That company that offers to "franchise" your business by putting there name with you and getting clients for you (I can’t remember the name but they are getting big) requires the appraisal business they are taking on to have an income of a minimum of $350,000 a year. I don’t qualify. There are a lot of appraisers that have gone with them making me think I am doing something wrong. I do know I am very fortunate. All my clients are great, they all have a huge volume of business most of the year and all pay ON TIME!!! I remember when I work with a guy years ago every month he carried over at least $5,000 in unpaid appraisals.
I guess just saying this has been one of the best January months in years would have been sufficient. Even when it is slow I do nothing but work. Other than the occasiaonl movie with the wife or one or two UFC fights I am at home working.

I think its grossly infair to imply someone may be a skippy based on how many appraisals they do, without knowing their specific circumstances. There are many of you "dying" out there right now due to a lack of work, while some of us are busier than ever.
I have a first class business model that took several years to develop and works very well for me. Not everyone is the same. Also, i work as many hours over as many days as it takes, you never know when this will end.
Some are more motivated than others, some are better business people than others.
While i agree that 40 a month for a sole operator is high, lets not jump to conclusions.

Dean, I agree with everything you have said, but made a somewhat joking somewhat possibly serious post, after reading something posted by Chris, someone I've known and trusted a long time. He was vague in his post, but I got the point.

60 appraisals working 24/7 in a cookie cutter market could be possible, maybe...... Again, no life, 24/7. Wish it was that way in my area Tennessee. (few cookie cutters here)

Call me what you want. I averaged 10 appraisals a week during the good times while working 45 hrs a week at my garbage job. I worked 7 days a week and on the weekends put in 16 hr days. During the week I slept from 10 pm till 2 am. Rght now it,s 8:23 pm and I have to be up at 2 am and do another 11 hr day. I'm still not going to bed till 10 pm even though I don't appraise anymore. I don't understand how you guy's think someone is a liar if they say they do 60 a month. maybe they are just better than you.
