Lawsuit Alleges Appraisal Institute Has Given States Fraudulent Test Results For Years

We live in interesting times. Realtors get sued and lose billions and agree they should have signed agreements with buyers. GSEs falsely accuse residential appraisers of being racially biased, but fail to really prove it in court. Colleges and University admissions are exposed that prestigious schools can be bribed to admit subpar students, TAF and AI create a program to bypass experience requirements for appraisers and it turns out they also fudge test scores. DOGE is in the process of exposing trillions of dollars of government spending fraud.

The appraisal swamp keeps regenerating its own, from the ASC to the CRN. how convenient.

How much does it cost to become member of the breakfast club?

You think I could get in for $20?

I would probably be kicked out before the meeting was over.

Add several zeros to the $20.00. Plus, there is no after-school detention with this Breakfast Club, just the opportunity to break antitrust laws to your heart's content. :giggle:

I have neither emotional nor financial reasons to delve into AI politics, but your allegation - which you repeat often - is duly noted. Again.

I have studiously avoided association with the Appraisal Institute throughout my entire career because I never cared for their culture as promulgated by some of the members. In my own region, at least. Regardless, that preference doesn't prevent me from recognizing some of the orgs accomplishments, the depth and quality of their training and the performance of probably a majority of their designated appraisers (although IMO a few of them don't always work to their competency).

IMO all groups have internal politics which eventually break down into cliques and tribalism, and from what I can see it appears that the AI is no different. That isn't a criticism of the org itself but rather just an observation of human nature in general. I would even go so far as to suggest that a certain amount of internal competition might be good for an organization. This forum is another example of such tribalism being of benefit to the level of discourse.

Some individuals may have emotional or financial reasons that prevent them from seeing the truth.
Yep.

I get it, the institute is a go along to get along org, and appraisers who have their whole identity and careers wrapped into the letters they rent are in a tough position. But it isn't the so called critics they should be angry with, it's local and national leadership. In the past year we've seen a call for periodic recertification of every appraiser, a public denial that the board was about to remove Dr. Chance-then a secret after hours meeting was called and she was fired, now a lawsuit has been filed alleging they harassed/fired the director of education for doing her job. Add to that they still don't have an accurate count of living members who pay dues, and after 7 months they decided to announce they are forming a committee to search for a new CEO, but surprise-surprise they won't answer who/what/where/when or anything else just a "we're forming a committee." Should I mention the failure that's called PAREA or would that be piling on?

With all of that said, getting mad at critics isn't going to fix anything, and IMO only perpetuates the ongoing problems. And I'm part of the problem too, I'm a member sending money to Chicago hoping someone will listen. I'm embarrassed to admit that.

I would love to see recertification for every appraiser every 4 or 5 years. I think that’s a great idea. What are the objections to this?

I also like the idea of peer review boards, though I can understand the objections to that one.
