Actually Ed, first is being used as a noun describing a set in Mr Rex's example. 1st is a number describing - a number. Numbers are not nouns or adjectives they are numbers. Thank you
Graders is the set. First is the adjective describing the set. Nouns do not describe sets. See Merriam-Webster's dictionary for clarification.
From Merriam-Webster's dictionary. "One" or "Two" or "Three" (or any other number for that matter) can be used as an adjective, a noun, or a pronoun.
While they are numbers, we use words to describe them. And in describing them, we define them. And in defining them, we qualify what they can and cannot mean. And in qualifying them, we assign them a part of speech. I didn't make the rules for English grammar. However, I do understand them quite well. I follow them better in formal writing than on forum posts...
