name for this kind of textured paint?

I've seen a rental house with the sort of textured interior paint that seems designed to both mask flaws and resist stains/dirt.

Is there a generic name for this sort of paint? The finish is very glossy and tapping fingernails emit a sort of plastic sound.

I'm assuming this is textured paint and not a more skim-coat like finish.

Are you sure its just not a knock-down texture apllied to the drywall, then painted?

What does the texture look like? As Bill said its likely "knock down" or "orange peel", or similar sprayed on drywall compound that is painted over.

I used this once in an old house - had to get ready to sell and did not have time to adequately fix the entry way walls.

It is a textured paint. It comes out all gloopy, then you roll it on and it appears rough and stubbly. It does hide flaws, and looks rather nice if you paint it the right color.

Just textured paint if not a drywall knockdown.

Could be. The texture is not very granular like I would expect blow-on to be, it sort of has all the high bumps flattened out maybe indicating it was rolled. The high bumps are about 1-2 inches in diamiter.

The texture is very uniform and when I first saw it I thought it was some sort of textured paneling.

It's on every wall and every ceiling.

It sounds like the knock down texture that was really popular in the 90's. Knock down is not granular, but as the knaem implies, the rough stuff is shot onto a wall, then knocked down to make it look kinda flat, but textured.

The granular drywall texture is only one way of texturing drywall (those little granules are little pieces of styrofoam BTW). Heres a picture of knockdown and others:

The edges of the bumps are pretty smooth. No sharp or rough looking rims or ridges. That could be due to thick paint-over.

So it's troweled on and then painted?

So I guess my finish is probably just high gloss paint.
