How long does it take to be approved by VA to get work? I want to apply to Colorado or Califoenia, whichever state is easier to get on VA panel is where i would go.
Thanks so much for this valuable info!It all depends. In NorCal they didn't take on ANY new VA appraisers for well maybe 20 years - until 2016 when they shot out blanket email invites to all BREA appraisers. I applied in 2016, heard NOTHING for about 15 months - then got an email that I was on the panel.
When I moved to Texas you'd think they would accept me as a transferee from the Phoenix (West Coast) panel - but they didn't. They were
not accepting transfers to the Houston panel at the time - so I had to get in line again with all the other applicants and wait for enough VA appraisers to retire to get a shot.
So its a crap shoot. Its an opaque hiring process like most government agency jobs. If you happen to want to work in a county they need appraisers in, you've got a better shot than if you are moving to a populated area that is over-saturated with appraisers. You also have to keep in mind that the VA rules technically require you to have a minimum of 3 years geographic experience in the area you will be working - which you will not have if you move cross country.
So - it ain't easy. Either way - good luck!
Colorado and California are under different RLC's. Based on my experience with it taking me years to get on the panel, they would want you to already be an active (not retired) real estate appraiser with years of experience. I also had years of working for other VA appraisers who had been on the panel for years, so I knew all the requirements. If you are not already competent appraising in either of those states or hold a reciprocal license, there is probably no point in trying that way. I have only done VA appraisals in different areas of Tennessee and have always answered to the Atlanta RLC.How long does it take to be approved by VA to get work? Good Luck! I would apply where you are now, like Alsie35 said, I applied when they were busy, more than once, then the economy crashed, and several long time VA appraisers retired or went into government work and they finally asked for a sample appraisal and I got on the panel in time to do liquidation appraisals back when they would send you a key to a possibly secured maybe vacant house. I could not get the county I wanted then either. I moved and had 2.5 years of appraisal experience in this area when I reapplied and got back on. By then I had got my CG, which helped too.Colorado and California are under different RLC's. Love it. Fees here went from $450 to $575. That’s about a 20-25% raise. I’ve been telling the RLC they were getting behind the times a bit with standard fees this past year; glad they revised the fee schedule. The highly complex assignments, I bid higher on, and they are generally approved. The higher fees just have to be approved by Lender/Client, VA RLC, and the veteran.VA has released their new timeliness and fees schedules effective Dec. 1 2021. To my eyes...they no longer segregate certain counties from the more populated 'metroplex' counties within my two states. In my two states...fees for 1004 URAR will rise by 28% and 44% respectively.....without delineating certain counties which pay more/less throughout the state.
Great news. https://www.benefits.VA.gov/homeloans/documents/docs/va_fee_timeliness.pdf
It could take years. It just depends on if the VA needs appraiser's in your area. How long does it take to be approved by VA to get work? I want to apply to Colorado or Califoenia, whichever state is easier to get on VA panel is where i would go.
