Restaurant Reset

Covid really upset the restaurant biz, and as many employees, cooks & waitstaff, initially lost employment due to the shutdowns, many used the opportunity to find better opportunities, education, stable jobs, because they HAD to! Thus, many did not return to work in restaurants where the hours can be wacko, and 'stable' tip income is subject to weather/rain/blizzards, street repairs in front of the place, and nearby events which can draw off regular customers here and there. If the cash drawer isn't jingling, there can be some tough days/months. I heard an earful about the egg prices for awhile.

What food is tariffed? Trump rolled back tariffs on most foods including coffee, beef (much opposed by US beef producers), and bananas.
Ethnic restaurants get ingredients overseas and still under tariffs.

LOL the Tariff may have been removed from coffee..... however, that did not appear to sway the coffee businesses to lower their prices.

Most ethic ingredients are sourced locally. I would think the internationally sourced items are not that common. Our local Chinese buffet hasn't changed prices for 2 years.

When I go to supermarket with my wife, I see the different produce. I'm surprise to see even in CA, many vegetables and fruits are from shipped from foreign countries.
There are labels stating where they originated from.
Even oranges from Australia. I haven't bought one but wonder if it tastes better.

Yep, there's a lot of rules around importing certain food stuffs. I'm still pissed at the TSA for making me throw out these amazing sausage cheese things I brought back from France...

Was it food costs? Or, mandated minimum wage hikes in your state. We're seeing prices that have not changed much in the past 2 years. They jumped during the Covid shutdowns then leveled off. But many cafes went under by that time.
IMO the effects of minimum wage hikes accrue across the entire food supply chain and beyond. Not just at the point of purchase the activists always want to focus on. We made that observation from from the beginning and they gaslit us like crazy over it. So dishonest.

TSA made my wife throw away her curry paste. Another time, they made me throw away my megabottle sunscreen spray. I said it's for health benefits but they didn't care. If I get skin cancer, it will be all TSA fault.

There must be a special dump site catering to all those airport "too large" plastic bottles of whatever. I had about 2 oz shampoo left in a larger bottle & they made me throw that away. Would have been just enough for my short 'vacay'. Had to buy the expensive mini-version replacement at my destination.

Speaking of TSA...

DHS reverses on TSA PreCheck amid shutdown; Global Entry suspended

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reversed course on Sunday and lifted a suspension on the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) PreCheck program.

The DHS had announced a suspension of TSA PreCheck screenings set to take effect at 6 a.m. on Sunday, as the department operates amid a funding lapse that has dragged on for more than a week. The PreCheck decision, however, was met with concern from the traveling public and airline industry groups.

While TSA PreCheck remains operational, the DHS said Sunday that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is halting all Global Entry arrival processing services. Global Entry allows pre-screened travelers arriving in the U.S. to pass through customs more quickly.
