Shoe Removal Fee- $20.00

I've been in plenty of filthy houses- especially dirty bathrooms. Sorry, but I'm not wearing my socks on someone's filthy wet bathroom floor that has never been cleaned. If a homeowner is that fastidious then they should buy the disposable booties for their guests. Basements, garages, or whatever have all sorts of junk on the floor that I'd rather not step on.

I used to take my shoes off when requested until the time I entered a bedroom and nearly stepped on an uncovered hypodermic needle. Don't know if somebody was a junkie or a diabetic, either way could have been my life. Neve ever take your shoes off! Do you think an engineer would take off his hard hat on a job site inspection? I don't think so.

I think from now on, I'll reply "My insurance doesn't allow me to take my shoes off for safety purposes."

I take each case by case. If I enter and the house is "lived in" or (heaven forbid) pretty dirty, I don't remove my shoes. Little shoes lined up at the door and people are of a different culture? I remove my shoes, but only if it's clean looking. New white carpet and a refi? Yes, I remove my shoes and don't wait to be asked.

New construction....sign on door says "please remove your shoes or boots"....I tromp right through, white carpet or not, because the model home sitter and/or builder have been obnoxious. Uhhhh.....sorry, I just measured the exterior and it's pretty soft out there  Guess they'll have to pay someone to re-clean the carpet....Payback's a ..............

I did a house where the lady was allergic to about everything. She asked me to put plastic shower caps over my shoes, so I would not track anything in to the home.

Later I found the Saran Wrap plastic covers for bowls. They have elastic edges like a shower cap...they are fairly cheap...and they fit right over my shoes. In a funky foreclosure I take them off as I step outside and throw them back into the house.

Since I got them, I've never been asked to take off my shoes, so I've not tested that out yet. I did a basement no shoes one time and vowed to not do that again.

I'll remove my boots if they are muddy, just out of common courtesy. However, I normally wear my steel toe, ankle lace up "red neck" Red Wing boots everywhere and don't think twice about treading on a client's pristine carpet 'cause I check them before knocking on the door and know if they're clean. Funny when they say "come in" while staring at your boots!!! Haven't left a "track" yet......... (I'll take 'em off if they request me to, after all it's their castle)

TE Lawrence,

Hey, do those Saran Wrap plastic coveres for bowls come in size 15?

I take it on a case by case base. I watch what the homeowner does then follow suit.

SERIOUSLY, folks...all this talk about culture and stuff is nice and PC...but I'm not going to start a trend amongst us appraisers about removing shoes in order to fit in culturally and and make the homeowner happy.

GOD FORBID we get the assignment for the nudist home.
Where are you gonna put your PDA?

You can buy a box of booties for about $10. While I wouldn't normally buy them just to keep from tracking up someone's home....I do have them for really muddy situations on construction sites. Slip a pair on, do your job, drop them in the dumpster. Sure makes my wife a lot happier!
