Simple Research.and this Forum!

I asked a question yesteday about the FHA follow-up inspection for lead based paint hazards, and the first or second reply took me to a source that I should have already known, but I didn't, and resulted in an entirely new understanding of the issue that I applied within 12 hours. On one hand I was very embarrased that I had the wrong perspective--although I participated in several previous similar threads concerning CB3-CB4 and don't recall anybody giving a definitive answer.

One of the drawbacks of our industry is that the mentor-trainee relationship is relatively exclusive and the trainee obtains a single perspective.

The Forum is a godsend and I've taken as much crap as anybody ever for my posts, but it is a good as pecan pie & ice cold milk...

You have been therefore in the same boat as all of us..ZZ
You found yourself in a situation in which you had to ask...I applaud you for that.
Never fear the asking as it appears you had a more complex question. We all learned because you asked!

Ray M...could not agree with you more...but I qualify my question with those that are looking for a simple solution and have done no research. I am much like you...the joy of my job comes from the research! I ask when I NEED to ask...

I must agree there are those that are just plain lazy, looking for the e z (easy) way out. They are the one's that cheat on test, ask someone else to write term papers and such.

Mr.R Strahan has given an excellent answer with his post as well as a few others.

I applaude an appraiser who recognizes that he/she needs help. I find it sad that they do not have local mentors to ask, or who will give a valid answer.

So, to those here on the forum, remember that you are having to replace the mentor, the educator, the experienced professional that should have been teaching the inexperienced appraiser in the first place. At least the appraiser has the sense to ask.

Sadly, this is so very true today. I fit this category and didn’t know what I didn’t know until I found this site.

I think the biggest problem that newbies have is attitude. Many come on here and if their ideas or questions are met with the least criticism, they feel attacked. Many do not appreciate the fact that they are getting free mentoring and education that can be invaluable if they just care to research and take a lot of it with a grain of salt. Too many are busy speed reading and flinging out insults that old timers are lazy and stuck in a rut because no one wants to hand them what they worked their lives to achieve.

Everyone wants a hug and a warm blankie from a public forum full of crankie appraisers, geez aren’t there other sites for that stuff?:rof:

Here is for everyone who needs a hug tonight...:Emoticon_hug:

I completely agree with you. We have so much info at our fingertips at all times with the net. The reality is our society as a whole is becoming more and more lazy by the day. We are much more dependant on others today to solve our problems.

I have no problem answering intelligent, thought out questions for the ill informed newbies or even the seasoned. When they come on this site, don't bother to do any research beforehand and then expect us to do their research/work for them, they will pay the price, one way or another. :new_2gunsfiring_v1:...........:fiddle:

I am coming from a somewhat frustated situation. So please understand.

I have noted that several recent posts on this forum relate to questions that can be EASILY answered by doing some very basic and simple research. My GOD the internet is full of answers if one takes the time to explore.

First, I hope that I am quoting properly as I have never done that before. Please pardon me if I am not and I do welcome the response from my peers on how to quote correctly.

Patti, the Internet is full of answers, but it doesn't mean that you will get the correct one. Remember that anyone can post anything to the Internet and it certainly doesn't mean that everything we read is true. I can recall several instances where I have posted a question and received responses that varied. In one particular case, a seasoned veteran gave me incorrect info and his peers blasted him. How would this seasoned veteran know he was in err if he did not reply to my post?

As "Appraisers" part of our job is to investigate, explore, and find anwers to questions we may have. Recently however I have found on this forum...it is easier for some to ask a simple question and expect a perfect answer...then get upset and whiney if they get blasted for asking.

So I ask this question...

When you pose a question to this forum...and you have done NO research ahead of time..
What really do expect from this forum?

You probably meant to say, what do you or what does anyone expect from this forum? I, personally, would expect appraisers to be able to spell or form sentences properly. If you were to ask me what I expect from this forum, I would say a multitude of answers based on various years of experience across the USA. I bite my tongue everytime I ask a question, but how does one learn? Let's say you have a mentor that is not doing things properly. Who does one go to? Their peers. That's who. When you log onto this forum, most post under a nickname or whatnot. Why would you think they do that?

Some want to remain anonymous. I don't think there is anything wrong with asking questions. I guess you would perceive it the way you view most things in life. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask, IMHO.

I recently had a situation of a niece that was missing overseas. I spent countless hours searching on the internet of avenues in which to find her. WE FOUND her through those countless hours.

I have no problem with folks asking questions here...but it appears to that we are getting some lazy *** appraisers looking for easy solutions to some very BASIC issues.

It is a good thing that you don't have a problem with it because THAT IS WHAT THIS FORUM IS FOR. Thank goodness it exists because many people are too afraid to ask questions. I, personally, welcome the opportunity to assist my peers, "lazy" peers or not.

If I offended anyone..than good...you may need to be offended! You might learn something.

Then good?

If I did not offend...than good...you understand!

Then good?

Well, I think I understand.:leeann:

Oops, it looks I did not use the quotes properly.

Typical newbie, padding her post count.

They are the one's that cheat on test, ask someone else to write term papers and such.

Hey, quit picking on me!

You said before there is no such thing as a stupid question. That's just what my professor used to say when I'd ask something that caused everyone else to laugh. Then he'd follow it with: "Just stupid people", staring directly at me. :icon_mrgreen:

To the original question.

The several times I've asked questions on here, it was really just to see what other appraisers would do for the sake of "doing what my peers would do". There is no research on the web that can answer that as well as a site where appraiser's give you direct feed back. I've printed some responses and put them directly in my file, and I am sure others on this board have done the same thing.

Answering questions is the very reason I post here. Answering the same question 20 or 30 times gets annoying.
