This one is kind of interesting. He originally got into some apparent trouble, right out of the box, when he submitted work samples with his application for certification.

They granted the certification, but placed him on probation. But, he apparently didn't do his CE. "oops, I took it, but can't remember when and can't find the documentation."

Maybe he DID take it just like he says, and the online company disappeared. I suspect we are going to see more of these kinds of cases now that so many people are taking online classes.

Tobias F. Schaeffer
In 1986, Roy Schaeffer obtained a Certified Real Estate Appraiser (CREA) designation for $75 from the National Association of Real Estate Appraisers (NAREA) for his cat, Tobias F (for "Feline") Schaeffer. He mounted Tobias' certification above his litter box. NAREA sued in federal court for fraud and "for disparaging remarks about the organization to members of Congress, other appraisers and the media". After two years and $70,000 in legal costs, the judge ruled that no fraud or defamation had occurred...
