California Faces High Pump Prices As Phillips 66 Shuts LA Refinery

teaser image

Phillips 66 will begin shutting down its 139,000 bpd Los Angeles-area refinery as soon as next week, sources told Reuters, moving forward on a closure plan announced last year. Units at the plant will idle in phases through Q4 2025, with the facility permanently offline by year-end.

California, meanwhile, is staring at a bigger problem. Between Phillips 66’s LA facility and Valero’s Benicia refinery, scheduled to close in 2026, the state is set to lose roughly 17% of its refining capacity. That’s a dangerous haircut in a state already paying the nation’s highest pump prices. Analysts warn that by late 2026, California gasoline could top $8 a gallon if supply disruptions collide with fewer in-state refineries.

... look at it this way .... as gasoline becomes scarce ... the price at the pump will rise ... demand my shift to EVs ... however California lacks electricity generation capacity plus the tax rebates go away making EVs more expensive :ROFLMAO:

Despite better news coverage and all the doomsdays talk the weather has not turned to be more dangerous. And that is despite to increased value of property and the propensity of humans to live near the coasts where flooding and hurricanes are more common.

It is amazing that the press can tell such bald-face lies without consequences.

According to EnergySage, the cancellation comes as millions of Americans struggle with rising energy bills due to increased air conditioning use — linked to rising global temperatures — and the surge in data center growth.
Truth. The average number of days above 100 F have DECREASED since the 1950s. The average number of days above 90 F have DECREASED. True enough people are using more AC - bigger houses and the lack of insulation beyond that required by code and more and more homes are air-conditioning their garages and enclosed patios. The median size of a new single-family house in 1970 was approximately 1,500 square feet, while the median size in 2024 was around 2,150 to 2,210 square feet. You have 33% more house to cool. The program was going to guarantee billions to build a transmission line across states with not only no access to the carried electricity but would force thousands of acres of farmland to be compromised with huge right of ways that would destroy the value of many places for eons not to mention the visual problem. And would it actually reduce electricity costs? Probably not. Electricity by wind and solar promised to be cheaper but in reality, with subsidies figured in, the cost is about 3x that of electricity generated by coal or gas.

So, if the electricity is needed on the east coast, why build windfarms in Kansas and Oklahoma and ship the electricity east? Build the solar and wind farms where the electricity is needed.
