The Russians long history with the Scythians is a sphere of influence with a common language (Russian) ..... NATO has been sticking its nose too far under Ukraines skirt for far too long. Russia has no interest in a puny piece of Ukraine - they just want their rightful buffer of respect/sphere of influence. Leave Ukraine alone and Russia will leave Ukraine alone.

As for the bolded part "we don't need our military deployed beyond our borders for any reason unless it's in our national interest" is the correct way to look at it. We already spend too much $$$ being the world cops.

It's going to be a lot more expensive to reverse aggression in the world than it would've been to prevent it from happening in the first place by supporting alliances with Western leaning nations that think like us and support our causes. As far as Vietnam goes, if we were actually there to support free and fair elections like we professed it would've been a noble cause however we knew said election would have resulted in Ho Chi Minh's victory so we never arranged for them to be held like we were supposed to after the first "Paris Peace Accords". The fact that Nixon and Kissinger knew the war was lost and still "surged" troops into Cambodia so Vietnam wouldn't fall to the Communists before he was elected to a second term elevated him to the status of "war criminal".

I think that George W. Bush actually did believe what he was trying to sell (elections would lead to Western-style democracies), Cheney and Rumsfeld however suffered under no such aspirations and saw American forces abroad as a way to control the world's resources which were to be divided up amongst the oligarchs & robber barons. I hate the fact that freely held elections in Muslim countries automatically leads to Sharia law which denies women education & basic human rights. I'm not sure where that puts me on the "neocon spectrum" however I hear the struggling heartbeats of liberty and freedom being smothered (aborted?) with all the "America First" isolationism being admitted from the new right wing during the present crisis.
