Virus Protection

Another vote for AVG.................my neighbor installed it for me (free version) after he "de loused" my computer (he owns a Geeks on Call franchise.) Also, the company I work for uses it as our primary AV software for the entire network. I have been really happy with it and it does not slow my computer down. I'm using the free version, but there is currently a link showing for the free 8.0 version when I load the program. I will install the upgrade tonight. I have used PC-cillin, Webroot, and Norton........all paid verions...................AVG free version is better than anything else so far.

I haven't found that to be true of software at all. Firefox, Google Earth, Google Sketchup, CCleaner, Utorrent, VLC player, 7 zip, notepad++ are just a few examples of free software I use that blow many paid software alternatives out of the water.

Also AVAST and AVG are not totally free programs. Only the home versions are free.

That would indicate that you are not getting the full protection you think you have. When I said free I was refering to programs for virus, malware, spyware and the like.

I would have to disagree as I have used AVG for a long time. I have never had an infection when using it. Their virus database is the same for free users as it is for paid users. About the only difference is support which I do not need for that or anything else having to do with computers.

I guess that is ok if you are comfortable with that.

I am very comfortable with not needing support as I got my first computer in 1984 and have used them daily since then. I haven't contacted any type of support that is computer related for years. The last time I did I knew more about the problem than the support person did, so from then on I solved my own problems.

AVG does have a support forum that is free for the free users, but I have never needed it because, as I said earlier, I have used AVG for over 5 years and never got a virus, trojan, worm, or anything.

That's good! I too don't need tech support very often but I prefer to know that my work computer is protected by something that is not free. Just my insecurity I guess.

Thumbs up for AVG for me also. Very good, no problems at all, and as Wayne states, no slow down annoyances, no viruses, trojans, worms, or sneaky snakes in your system at all. Perfect!!!

Yep. Just your insecurity. Most of the best software is free, or very low in price in todays world except for niche applications.

I'd rather be safe than sorry!

If you go to avg's website it appears you have to pay for the new version. If you go to cnet in the download section its free.
