When To Say No!

Whenever we want to say no! We don't even need to rationalize it. This is one of the benefits of working for ourselves. I think we forget that sometimes. Personally, I am reserving my "yes" for faithful clients, and saying no to one night stands- people who call from out of the blue who will never offer repeat business.

Have to agree with Lysander - a lot of my orders come by fax with no prior phone call. Makes it easy on the lender & me not having to play phone tag.

Just remembered another one..... when the "NASCAR collection library" is the best addition/room on the trailer.

And as for # 1, amended it to read:
1. If the order is not from an established client, and they send you an order without any verbal communication first.

I don't think #13 is racist at all...on the contrary--I think it's an excellent example of the pitfalls of globalization.

All we need now is for government acceptance of "did not visit site" appraisal reports, and we could take our certifications and open shop in China--yeah, that's the ticket...we could offer a fee split to their communist government and have political prisoners type reports all day long. If they don't type 25 a day--they'll have to spend a half hour in the chamber...

...or maybe we can get 13 year old girls in Indochina to type reports...we could offer them a few pennies more to lure them away from Nike!

When people can't even say island (Izzland--actual example), how am I going to explain the intricacies of appraising in a self contained market area or the need for a higher fee?

In a rush to find the absolute lowest labor prices the planet has to offer, corporations appear woefully unaware of a principle appraisers are very familiar with--The Point of Diminishing Returns!

I've told my clients about these dog & pony shows...if you want to pick up the phone in WA, and call someone 2,000 miles away to order an appraisal--to have them pick up the phone and call India--to have them pick up the phone and call WA in an attempt to find an appraiser who'll appraise on an Izland...have at it. When you get tired of the nonsense and broken promises...pick up the phone and call me...I'm 5 miles from your office, certified and charge what the Izlanders do.

Looks like we have an argument here for the adoption of a universal language.

I don't consider myself prejudiced, but I do get irritated when I can't understand the person on the other end of the phone line that I am trying to do business with. Whether they are trying to sell me something or whether it is for my appraisal business. I know they need a job, but it slows me down considerably just trying to communicate. Perhaps they would be better off in a different field than communications?
