Wild Fires In LA

Most interesting comment I heard during the past several days of non-stop TV coverage was by a LA reporter who indicated that "10% containmen" of a fire is defined functionally by the fire fighting industry as being successfully contained with little if any potential to cause further damage. I presume that a typial layperson would assume that 10% of anything is marginal at best, although I've never heard the issue being discussed elsewhere...

No,
How does that help someone if they don't sell? Or even want to sell? I mean I have a farm. On paper it's worth a lot. But since I don't want to sell, its value is just as a place to live. Paying crushing property taxes for 30 years means if you do sell at the end of the 30 years, the accrued taxes will take a huge part of the value away. I've lived here in this spot 41 years. Do I have to sell every 5 years or so to arbitrage the accrued value?
No, I am just sayig that since those who bout a long time ago will at some point have huge equity if they sell (or they could refinance or take r new mortgage and enjoy it now, that they should in deepngo n sttes pay taxes based on current value vs what they bought it for X years ago -

Just exploring the topic - what I see in our country is nobody wants t pay taxes, or they want to pay very little, yet they somewhat people except $ to be there for storm preparation, FEMA funding, hardening communities against disasters, replacing aged electoral and other systems, FEMA funding in the hundred of billions in cse needed etc -where is supposed to come from (? no, tariffs won;t do it they will just raise prices and people will buy fewer goods )

Imo, fwiw, people all of us need to stop being so greedy and if we are serious about paying down the deficit and replacing aged infrastructure, building up a reserve fund, etc-it might take a slow growth 10-year period to address it with paying more toward the deficit via taxes -do we need to always buy so much consumer junk ? drive big bloated cars with one person in it?

Careful now...Grant is going to become even more unhinged if you insist on finding a silver lining in this cloud.

BTW, with your background, how many of these fires do you think were intentionally set? Seems unlikely that many fires would break out simultaneously and at the worst time possible.

Also might be a good time to buy Home Depot stock.
I'm close friends with a young girl in LA County who told me that her brother of high school age was arrested several months ago for trying to start a brush fire. Unsure how I'll react if and when we ever meet because it is horrible, even when I strain to remember terrible things I did as a stupid jurvenile.

No idea. Possibly none of them this time. However, in many of these events we find some firebug or careless hiker or electrical transmission line has been the flashpoint.

This region has had several major wildfire events over the years during the late fall months. We just had another such event occur a month back or so that burned some of the outlying areas out in s/w Riverside County. Several years ago the hillside areas on the s/east side in my town lost a number of homes to wildfires and we were all keeping an eye on their progress lest the fire get to us.

The city of Anaheim has some foothill areas on its east side, but one year a fire event kicked up during the Santa Ana conditions right near Disneyland which is nowhere near the hills. That fire wiped out several subdivisions even though located several miles away from "semi-rural".

The prevailing winds in the region normally flow from the sea to the desert. The ocean is basically our air conditioner. But when the desert winds kick up everything changes. The wind direction runs from the desert to the sea and they pick up energy and speed as they get funneled through the passes in the mountains. They also dry out so the humidity drops a lot. Our activities have nothing to do with these conditions and relatively little to do with the fire hazard itself. They're going to occur every year regardless of how hard we try to manage them.

I appraised a condo in Corona, CA, several months ago. The formal condo cert described no potential environmental hazards, although I reported info from the City Planning Dept that described the location as something like "a high probability fire hazard zone." Unsure whether my comments affected funding/lending.

You better check that. Containment typically means how much of the perimeter of the fire has been stopped from spreading

Heard on KTLA that 'assessor says 2/3rds of the value in these affected areas is in the land" and HOs are still liable for property taxes. Also that adjusters are offering cash payments if they settle 'today.'

People losing everything in a fire and having nothing left is a GREAT time to be showing off your "sense of humor" and then say that most Libs are born without one, I'm a moderate and am not a R or D, you're comments during this AWFUL time for so many who have lost everything are pretty pathetic and it has nothing to do with your political choice, it has to do with you as a person.
Darn, now you made me feel bad.

I'll try to refrain from pointing out the abject failure of the CA politicians during the next fire, and the fire after that, and the fire after that.....

I thought about actually trying to that TV station, but of course I totally forgot about it until now.
