Windows Tablets For Fieldwork

Hi Randall,
I hope you can answer this question, I had a sketch I had to do very complex. As complex as you can get. It was a almost kidney shaped. All the angles lined up fine on the sketch but the end result was the dimension's saying invalid.
I used Medina and apex5. Same result for both programs. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Hi Allen,

More than likely you have some points/vertices/lines that overlap - not unheard of when things get complicated. If you will PM me with your contact info, I'll make arrangements to get your sketch file and investigate it. Just give me an email address, a phone number and the best time to call and we'll get right on it.

Last week I found a Dell Venue 11 Pro on Dell's outlet store for $769. It should arrive this week. The reviews looked good and the tablet looks to be loaded:

Windows 8.1 (64 Bit)

10.8 inch IPS Display with FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution with 10-pt capacitive touch

8GB DDR3 Memory

Intel® Core™ i5 4210Y processor (3MB Cache, 1.5 GHz Dual-Core)

Intel® GT2 Graphics card

256GB Mobility Solid State Drive

Dell Wireless® 1537 Dual-Band 802.11n WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0

Integrated 2MP HD Webcam (front) / 8MP (back)

1 x Full size USB3.0. 1 x Headphone and microphone combo jack, 1 x mini HDMI
Near Field Communication (NFC)

I am still lusting after a Surface Pro 3 but the price is just too pricey. Any thoughts on whether these are going to come down to a reasonable level? That is, under $700 with i5?

The Dell Venue Pro has been relatively popular with a few County Assessment departments and I find the build quality to be good. Note that early units had "pen" issues, but they are mostly worked out now. If your pen behaves poorly, do not hesitate to contact Dell on this item and make sure you have the latest revision.

Also, FWIW, our Iain Nicholson is cleaning out his "legacy closet" of extra stuff that has piled up. It appears that we have an extra "Dell Tablet Keyboard - Slim" that somehow got orphaned from its original device (or maybe I just bought an extra?) So if you, or anyone else here wants it, I'll let it go for $50 including shipping, etc. Just PM me with your contact info (email, phone) if you want it. I posted a picture or two "way back when" but here is a link to the Dell page for this item. http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=332-2366 I may, or may not also have a desk dock, and if I do I will post notice.

While I'm on this, we seem to have an extra Docking Station for a Surface Pro or Surface Pro 2 - like to product page here: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Docking-Station/productID.286866900 Iain is trying to get me to get rid of the Surface Pro (2?) we keep for testing but I'm not sure I want to get rid of it :-\ - it also has its own docking station. He is scrubbing it now so I won't even know if it is a 1st Gen Pro or a Pro 2, nor the RAM & HDD, but once I know I'll post the basic specs and price. The extra Docking Station is definitely going away though, so if you need one, let me know by PM.

I'll be out of pocket most of the day tomorrow per the big MS event, but should be back in the office by mid-day Thursday.

Michigander,

I don't see the likelihood of the SP3 with Core i5 dropping to $700 anytime soon - at least not until a refresh (or "SP4") is announced.

Semi-related topic...
Was out of the office on Wednesday due to the big MS announcements around Windows 10. This was an event with a very small group of Windows Insiders and journalists but the announcements were far reaching. I did not attend (wasn't invited - I'm small potatoes, LOL) but a friend of mine was there and he has followed up with some additional details regarding some questions I had. From what I've learned, we're on track for some meaningful opportunities with the next release. This being a Windows Tablet PC-oriented thread, I'll not go into most of the topics covered, but stick to things specific to or closely related to the things that matter to Tablet PCs. Probably the top item for folks envisioning using a "2-in-1" or "Hybrid/Transformer" type device,is how the new "Continuum" feature works. This was shown on Wednesday and looks to be a great feature. Based on what I know, and what trusted sources tell me, I'm seeing some folks in "the press" don't quite have this described adequately in their rush to get their articles out "first." Also, we'll need to give this some time to mature - Windows 10 is still a product with active input from Enterprise folks, manufactures and regular Windows Insiders. What I can say is that unless you are using something like a SP3, you won't be able to use this in the early builds (and I still urge folks NOT to run pre-release builds on their production devices!) since a device manufacturer needs to include this capability in their device. So, if you have an SP3, it works now, if not - well maybe, probably later. The other big news for most is that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 if you do it within a year of the final release. I'm also seeing articles that (incorrectly) speculate that MS means to charge an annual subscription. We'll get some official builds next week and I'll be going through it on a few dedicated devices. In the interim, I'll refrain from speculation and only report what I know - and how it will affect you. (I'll likely create a new resource/thread for W10 since it is for so much more than just Tablets - desktops, phones, entertainment and even "Star Wars.")

Kudos to MS for stepping up to the plate with W10. With everything else going on, its great to see them being innovative again. Everything else just feels old...

Noted a great price drop on the Lenovo site for the Lenovo ThinkPad 10. Prices range from $350.60 to a high of $491.40. The model with 4GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage run $419.40 and $491.40 if you want the 4G LTE (Verizon or AT&T) version. FWIW, this the device I use as my daily driver for day-to-day stuff, including testing stuff. I'm currently running Windows 10 (9926) and it is behaving as expected - just fine for my purposes. I had no problems when running Windows 8.1 64-bit... Not sure how long this price will last - Lenovo has a habit of running sales like this from time to time and just as suddenly, change it back up to the near retail price, so if one of these recommended devices strikes your fancy, better order it quickly!

If you're not using it for appraisal stuff and can get by on 2 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage (plus whatever microSD card you add), the $359.40 model is a great price for a business class device. That said, I think that spending an additional $60 for twice the RAM and twice the storage is the better buy. It costs another $72 to switch to a device with 4G LTE capability... For ME, that was the wiser move, even though I had no issues using my phone in "tethered" mode.

Hope this helps!

If anyone has an MS SP3, I have word through a fellow Windows Insider and MVP that there is a meaningful firmware update for those units with Samsung SSDs which provides a significant performance boost. While my source is trusted/reliable, I have not been able to install/verify this myself as of yet - my personal SP3 was borrowed by an employee this week for a training session. He wanted to show the latest Av6 and we've not yet put it up on the web site... Anyway, once he returns, I'll test this myself. Since not many of you here have SP3s (?), I won't go into detail, but if you have one with a Samsung SSD, feel free to PM me ad I'll point you the right direction... If I have time, I'll dive in and see if it is applicable to SP2's and/or any particular model/run of Samsung SSDs...
