Windows Tablets For Fieldwork

FWIW, while reading comments on an article that caught my eye, a person mentioned that you can pick up a Lenovo Miix 700 "2-in-1" which has a similar form factor to the SP4 at a good price at the link below. Note the following prices and see if you can spot the best bang for the buck ;-)
  • Core m3, 4GB RAM, 64 GB storage - $739.00
  • Core m5, 4GB RAM, 128 GB storage - $599.99
  • Core m7, 8GB RAM, 256 GB storage - $599.00

Note that I have NOT used the Miix 700 personally in any significant way - i.e. real world test scenarios simulating appraisal/inspection activities, and I'm just looking at specs on paper. But dang if that doesn't look like a good price to me! I believe the new Acer I mentioned has a brighter screen, but if you are not in a particularly harsh sunlight environment, then this may be a deal for you. If this item interests you, I recommend looking for reviews, but FWIW, here is a detailed one done by Steve, who is well respected.

Here is the link to the sale item:

MS is offering $150 off of the Surface Pro 4 with Core i5, 4GB of RAM and 128 GB SSD, making it $849, which is $50 less than the Core m3 model. Additionally, you can get $50 off of the recommended Surface Dock if purchased together:

The Surface Pro 4 deal at $849 is also available at Best Buy but I saw no mention of a deal on the Surface Dock:

When I checked at Amazon, I found the same model available for $781.00, showing only 1 in stock (don't know if/when they will get more at this price) and $732.70 for the Core m3 model:

[Edit] I also noted that MS is giving away a 3 month subscription to Hulu with the purchase of "select Surface or PC" models and the i5/4GB/128GB model does qualify.

Hope this helps!

On the other hand, if you prefer more laptop-than-tablet in your 2-in-1, Best Buy is offering the excellent HP Spectre x360 with 13.3" FHD touch screen, Core i7, 8GB of RAM and 256 GB SSD for $999 and if you can manage to qualify for the College Student Deal, I'm told that it drops it to $849.99 (you'll want to verify that.)

I checked on Accidental Damage Protection and they are offering it for just over $200, so that is good.

Hope this helps!

Randall et al:

I spent some time yesterday at Apex's office with Brian. Thanks again for setting this up. 6 really looks awesome. I hope it works as well for us.

So, I'm down to these possible solutions:

Microsoft Surface 3, 4GB, 128GB, LTE. Microsoft tells me that it will work with Verizon. Total price is about $1000. with UAG rugged case, keyboard and pen. The problem is that they are currently out of stock, and manufacturing will be discontinued late this year. Sales support said they had them a few days ago, and more should show up.

Lenova Thinkpad, 4GB, 128GB, LTE. The rugged case sucks, or I'd buy this in a second. About $100 less.

Panasonic Toughbook, 8GB, 128GB, LTE. $1800. Ouch.

At this point, I think I'm waiting for Microsoft to get them in stock.

Thanks again for the AWESOME hospitality.

FWIW, below are review links for the Acer Switch 12 Alpha Tablet/2-in-1. As usual, Lisa Gade does a thorough job with her review. I noted that some commenters were reporting problems with the Synaptics pen, but Lisa says it is fine for note-taking, much like what appraiser/inspectors do vs. "artist" type activities. That said, I prefer Wacom and now N-Trig pen/digitizer systems. IU saw one commenter mention that they picked up their Core i5/8GB RAM/256GB SSD model for only $499 including keyboard cover, pen, etc. I could not find that model on their site but the Core i7/8GB RAM/512 GB SSD was $899 and I am wondering if the commenter got the model wrong... I found the model reviewed at Best Buy for $699 ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/acer-sw...ive-gray/5366409.p?id=bb5366409&skuId=5366409 )

"Smackdown" Video - Acer Switch Alpha 12 vs. MS Surface Pro 4:

[Edit] I forgot to (re)emphasize one of the things that you may want to consider. The SP4 is air cooled so it has a fan that sucks in external air and blows it out, just like your regular desktop computers. The problem with that, especially if you plan to use it in outdoor environments, is that dirt/dust and other contaminants can get inside and clog up the airways. Just take a look at your regular desktop right now and see how dirty it is inside. The SP4 (and all laptops, too) has MUCH smaller airways and thus, not only is it easier to clog up, but it can be much less forgiving... The Acer uses an enclosed vapor cooling chamber design which means it does not need to suck in air and blow it back out in order to cool down the internals. Hence, it should be less vulnerable to contaminants when used outside. Just food for thought...

Hope this helps!

Best Buy is offering $200 off the Samsung Galaxy TabPro S - 12", 4GB RAM, 128 GB SSD in black which makes it $699.99(the white model is $50 more.) You can see more specs at the link below:
FWIW, while this is a healthy discount, and I generally like Samsung devices, I'm not so sure that this is the BB4TB, but YMMV so if it interests you, check it out. It is awfully thin :-)
I don't have word on how long the sale price is good for.

Lenovo revealed two more upcoming tablets today:
  • Lenovo Miix 510, and the
  • Lenovo Book

Basically, the Lenovo Miix 510 is a less expensive (starting at $600) version of the Miix 700 - it'll be both more powerful and a bit heavier, but still under 2 lbs. And it will reportedly be available with 4G LTE options, which is an important item for many, especially since 4G is only available in the lowest configuration of the SP4, and with limited specs. No word (yet) on what the (rumored) SP5 will have...

Perhaps the more interesting is the Lenovo Book. This one is unique among the current tablets. You'll have to watch the video to get the full impact. Of course, this is a marketing piece, but you can see why it would be exciting to several demographic groups. If they can deliver something even close to what they are promising for the quoted starting price of $549 ($499 for Android version), it should be popular. This device will also reportedly be available with 4G LTE, making it potentially attractive as a companion device for some. The display is commonly described as 16:9 but it is actually 16:10, which is better for productivity, but still inferior to devices with a 3:2 (15:10) aspect ratio like the latter versions of the MS Surface devices (and their clones.)

Lenovo Book introductory marketing video:

[Edit] Added few comments above for clarification, plus a brief "hands-on" video of the Lenovo Book below. Also, FWIW, I have not seen nor used this device myself, nor do I have any personal/private feedback on it yet. I will wait for a report from a trusted source before getting in line for one of these devices. As interesting as it is, I'm not sure it has the right mix of features/specs to satisfy what most of my users are telling me that they need. Regardless, I will be testing one, but perhaps in a more superficial manner than if it were very compelling for a significant percentage of users. I don't mean this to slight the device - I just need to concentrate on items that offer significant ROI for users.

Hope this helps!

FWIW, I see that you can pick up an HP Envy Note 8 at the MS Store for only $199. This model includes the Wacom pen. I regularly recommend a minimum of 4 GB of Ram in tablets, but this is mainly for those who intend on running their full appraisal apps on them. I've found that for casual "companion device" use, a 2GB machine will suffice as long as you don't try to treat it like a full bore machine. An 8" tablet is sort of the sweet spot for me with regards to ergonomics during inspection type activities - large enough to see things and still fits in the hand and in the rear pocket of regular jeans, etc. I like that this model includes the Wacom pen which for me is almost a must for note taking (plus I prefer sketching with a pen), annotating exhibits/photos, etc. It is available with 4G LTE (Verizon) for $230 with keyboard (see 2nd link below), too. I have not tested our software lately on things with less than 3 GB (my phone) and it ran just fine, The last lower end HP Tablet I used for testing was the HP Stream 8 which was running Windows 8.1. This Note 8 should run faster (per faster CPU/GPU and more efficient Win 10.) I checked out the price on Amazon and it was $80 higher, so I will be getting one of these while they are on sale so I test it out myself.

If you just want touch only and need an 8" tablet, you might want to try this one at the MS Store for only $99. Personally, I think it is worth the extra $100 for the "name brand" and the Wacom pen, but for half the price, this could be a nice little companion device, too: https://www.microsoftstore.com/stor...459594)(TnL5HPStwNw-n6Nv3RVmq24saNBKUpr13Q)()

Also, remember, when you get a "Signature Device" through the MS Store, it has all the crapware removed, so it is clean and runs better than the same machines sold through other retailers.

Hope this helps!

Just a short comment today...

I met up briefly with a long time friend today who was passing close by. She said if I had an extra buck or two for a burger and a beer, she might have something to show me. Turns out, I did have an extra 8 or 9 quarters and other misc. loose change with me, so I scurried to the designated Spy vs. Spy location. Seems that she just happened to have a loaner Lenovo Miix 510 in her back pack. Try as I might, she wouldn't leave it with me for further study ;-) Still in the maybe 20 or 30 minutes that she was distracted by the burger, I came away more favorably impressed than I expected to be with how it felt and the apparent build quality, etc.

I'm not sure about the out-and-out performance as I didn't even try to compare it with my Surface Book and I didn't have an SP4 with me. I did have my trusty TP10 with me, but there was really no comparison - the Miix 510 is just a more capable machine (as one would expect) than the TP10. Just from a seat-of-the-pants perspective, it felt about as snappy with mainstream apps as I remember most Core i5 SP4s I've used recently and it felt just about the same with regard to weight (again, strictly from memory.) Due to the fact that the device is on loan and still owned/registered through Lenovo, I couldn't go on the app store and get any of our stuff to test, so everything I ran through was regular "Office" and productivity stuff that was already loaded on the device - I didn't even try a game... No big deal - our apps aren't very heavy so the mainstream apps were more of a stress check than our stuff would have been anyway.

The screen is lower resolution than the SP4 and SB, but I really can't say that I noticed it looking grainy - really, the resolution is more than adequate - in fact, it was quite nice. My SB screen is punchier and I remember my SP4s looking even better, but given the price, I'd say the Miix 510 screen is really good for the buck. (Of course, it still needs an anti-reflective screen protector in sunny environments IMHO.) I still prefer 3:2 (15:10) aspect ratio over the 16:10 aspect ratio on the Miix 510, but I could live with it, given the relative bargain.

One thing that I DID notice being considerably better (IMHO) was the included keyboard. It is in many respects similar to the SP4 keyboard with regard to looks and functionality, method of attaching, general size and key travel, etc., but the Miix 510 keys are not flat like they are on most 2-in-1's (heck, most laptops) made by almost every other manufacturer. Thankfully, Lenovo has continued to put a mild sculpting on the keys that makes it more comfortable to type on and I really appreciate the way Lenovo give you regular size arrow keys! My friend forgot the pen (probably lost it, knowing her, - inside joke, LOL) so I couldn't try that out, but the Miix 510 uses a Wacom digitizing system (screen and pen combo), so I wouldn't expect there to be any problem there. Overall, I definitely came away from my brief experience liking it more than I thought I would which means procuring one for formal field testing just got kicked up the list a few slots ;-)

Of course, I asked if she had access to any other Lenovo goodies, but that didn't even register a smile with her... Hmmmm... Probably means she's been feeding me more info than I've been feeding her lately, ha ha... I still wish I understood HOW she gets stuff like this way before I do ;-)

Hope this helps!

[PS Edit] - I can verify that there IS a 4G LTE option as unit she had was showing a cellular connection. By the time I got to the designated meet-up spot, she had had already made a Wi-Fi connection at the establishment so I used that and simply neglected to test out how well 4G was working, my mistake. I am pleased, however, that we will now have another option for those who desire a tablet with a 4G option. Many people these days find this to be an important element when selecting their device. It is, in fact, the main reason I still carry my TP10 with me in my bag. If my other daily driver was 4G LTE-equipped, I'd probably drop the TP10 altogether. I can easily use my L950 phone for a cell connection but I'd still prefer it to be built into the tablet. Just my 2¢ on that particular item...

The attractive ASUS Transformer Mini is now shipping for $399 with 4GB of RAM and 128 GB of Storage. This is a 10.1" Win 10 Tablet PC and it includes the keyboard and pen. Note that it does not have a rear camera, so if you like this form factor but require a rear camera, this is not the device for you. You can read more at the Amazon link below. Note also that they will be releasing one with 64 GB of Storage later, too. FWIW, I won't likely be getting this particular model - I like it well enough to perhaps get a low spec one for testing, but for now, my low spec machine is a 2 GB RAM HP with an 8" screen and it has been handling MobileSketch 10 and the new build of Av6 reasonably well. Look for an Av6 update soon - it'll have some overdue bug fixes, tweaks and some new features. This Transformer Mini is interesting to me, though, for the 10.1" size - it would compete with the older Surface 3 on many basic levels, but without a rear camera and/or 4G LTE, it simply doesn't tick enough boxes to get me to spring for it since I have so many other test devices above and below this spec line.

[Edit] I also found it at B&H Photo but it is still listed as "Preorder" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...er_x5_z8350_4gb_128ssd_windows_10_10_1_t.html

Promo video below. Once I find a decent review video, I will post the link.
