Windows Tablets For Fieldwork

Hi Chris, sorry for the delay in replying.
You are looking for a new laptop vs. tablet, right?
I'm happy to respond on the screen aspect ratios on whatever units you are most interested in.
The main thing I'd want to know is whether or not you plan to use it outdoors very often or whether it is mainly/strictly for inside duty.

Been using for both. Laptop convertible for outdoors. Would dock in office. Tried a kickstand model once and did not like it for use as a laptop. Have had 13-14 in models but my eyes are getting worse so am hoping for 15-16 inch now. My first unit was a Lenovo x61 I think, had 2 of those, then went to first generation surface book, then Thinkpad p-35, not sure. P something. That one was a 16:9 screen, not the greatest. Then I had a Thinkpad x1, nice 3;2 screen but did not get along with the kickstand, and most recently HP spectre x360. Worked ok, screen brightness a little weak and screen itself paper thin, have replaced twice. Looking to upgrade to a device that does everything.

Thanks for the clarification(s), Chris! I'll put together a short list of the models I think might work out best for you, given the parameters. My "heavy lifting" laptop ATM is a Lenovo with a 16 inch, 16:10 aspect ratio screen. (I find that works better for me all around than a 16:9 but a 3:2 works better for the sort of productivity apps that I run.) I find my Lenovo + charger is pretty heavy in a backpack when on lengthy trips and of course when one limits their choices to 3:2 screen, the list is even shorter... I guess the last questions for you relate to use case scenario - Will you be using it outdoors much, and do you need a true desktop replacement - i.e. are you running any apps that are really CPU/GPU demanding? When I ordered my travel laptop for a circumnavigation trip last year, I wanted it to "do everything" and I paid the price in both dollars (naturally) and portability/weight, etc. Looking back, I coulda/shoulda gotten a far less performant build and "sacrificed" perhaps 5 or 10 seconds on any of the few relatively demanding operations that I realistically only did 2 or 3 times a week - they rest were things that would have had a negligible effect... I always seem to order overbuilt computers and end up regretting my CPU/GPU/RAM/SSD "requirements"... I end up replacing it before it has really become close to being obsolete anyway. I guess the main thing I won't compromise on is build quality & reliability...

Your thoughts will help me do a better job with my suggestions.

Why not a desk with rolling wheels to really make appraising a dream job.

Desktop replacement for sure and I do use outside daily. I too have always overbuilt, but the units last me 5-6 years and am willing to spend the extra for the performance and longevity. I am not too concerned about weight as have never really noticed that as an issue. Would prefer to have largest screen and battery possible. I have always looked at the specs you provide and the performance aspect has always been in the back of my mind ie slower processor equals better battery life possibly, but have always pulled the trigger on fastest processor with most memory and largest ssd I could get. Most of the time those went hand in hand. Would live to have 2tb drive if possible or at the very least a 1tb drive and an sd card port for additional storage. I don't use anything that is processor intensive at this point, internet, alamode suite, of course apex, and the microsoft office suite. I do however have my eyes o the future with the expectations of keeping the unit 4-5 years, and at this point I am seeing some interesting things coming down the pike. First, I am looking at the newer UAD format and wondering if additional processor speed will help that in any way and second, I have noticed that at least one other software platform is going to come at the new forms from a different direction and ie. is AI going to be a factor going forward with what we do? Always really appreciate your thoughts and thanks for your invaluable help.. Chris Wagoner, Certified Residential Appraiser State of Indiana

Hey Chris, 2 more questions...
Are you saying you want a 16" or larger screen? So would a 17" or 18" screen be preferred?
Do you have much interest in a laptop's purported capabilities in handling AI tasks?

If I could get a 16-18 inch convertible I would certainly entertain that. I have my eyes on AI, but not sure at this point what it would do to help me. Not closed off to it, but have not seen anything concrete at this point.

All points understood, Chris.
Remind me about your current device specs, please, so I can do a comparison grid of the essential elements for my "Sales Comparison Analysis Grid" ;-)

HP Spectre x360 14t 11 gen I-7-1165G7 2.80 ghz 16MB Ram, 128 MB graphics card, showing 1.4TB storage with 844gb used. I am not sure that is accurate, I believe it is 1TB SSD and I am using a 512 microSD for file storage. (which is full) So would utilize 2TB drive or at least or 1TB again with SD card reader for storage, hopefully with 1TB card or possible secondary internal drive? Not sure anyone does that anymore. 64 Bit Windows 11 pro. Pen. I always get the best and longest support package available. With HP I was not able to get accidental insurance on x360, and have replaced screen twice myself. Lenovo always had great next day on site, but unfortunately I had to use it frequently. (The tech guy was on my Christmas card list). replaced most boards in the unit multiple times... Chris Wagoner Certified residential Appraiser State of INdiana
