NAR - Appraisal Institute

I never believe the public comments with these sorts of things. The NAR does not need the AI. It's the other way around. Furthermore, there are many AI members who are also NAR members. So it's very easy for the AI to try and work something out, only to then promote it as have been approached by NAR.

Having known people in high positions with both orgs, I'm don't trust what either of them publicaly say.

Pat and All,

It surpised me too, but NAR did make the initial contact with the Appraisal Institute. I heard it directlly from the lips of Janet Branton, Senior Vice President AE/Leadership, International & Specialties.

The same thing was relayed to me by folks within the AI. The only difference was, they said "the top guy at NAR" made the contact.

NAR does need and want the Appraisal Institute as an affiliate.

Just for kicks, here is the latest appraisal related policy from NAR. The most recent change to it was adopted in May, 2007. What do you think?

I think it's a fine policy. Too bad it's just lip service. There are laws and regulations in place protecting appraiser independence, too. Without enforcement, they don't amount to anything more than lip service either. And on top of that, from what I've seen, NAR isn't much when it comes to enforcement.

Back when the AIREA was still associated with NAR, it was equally weak on enforcement.

For those who don't think the AI does much lobbying or promoting of appraisers' best interests, do you really think NAR will? I just don't see much of common interest. How many appraisers who are currently Realtors would be if they could get data without MLS?

John,

The document is a PUBLIC POLICY statement. It is not a rule to be enforced. Take another look. The purpose of the policy statement is to seek or support legislation that embraces those goals.

If you bother to look at some of the pending Federal Legislation (Kanjorski amendments - H.R.3837), you just might some of those goals and objectives. Do you believe that happened out of coincidence? Do you want the names of the NAR Lobbyists that worked with Kanjorski's staff?

At any rate, the purpose of my original post was to gauge the reaction. It's pretty much as I expected. Most will believe what they want to believe, regardless of the amount of data, documents, statements and actions they are provided.

Peace.

Re; Part of the deal is better than art of the deal

[QUOTE Fran
Couch Potato;1480346]I would not expect it to be part of the deal, but I can dream.:rof:

Actually I don't mind the REALTOR® dues as much as the AI dues now that I'm in North Carolina (Wayne took away the ability for us to change states for a while and I never bothered to look again to see it was back. LOL) where I am also a licensed broker. Unlike the Orlando area where there were local meetings and education, here in North Carolina there is only one chapter for the state and meetings are at least a two day event. AI and I will likely part ways at the end of this year. Being part-time, only one set of dues is in the budget. :new_smile-l:[/QUOTE]

Couch-broker/appraiser;
LOL.
And another heart felt dream remark;
actually think Las Vegas will be a better place after NAR meets there.

Re-unification is a terrible idea. Does anyone not see the obvious conflict of interest? While we're at it, why don't we also align ourselves with the Mortgage Bankers Association? NAIFA had similar talks with the NAR, but the discussion broke down over this simple fact: If a difference of opinion ever arises between those selling real estate and those appraising real estate, the NAR will ALWAYS side with the salesperson, not the appraiser.

I doubt seriously the dues will be any less. I think lots of people don't remember part of the reason for leaving NAR to begin with was the unification of AIREA and The Society of Real Estate Appraisers. Wonder if NAIFA will become part of the happy family?

More likely, NAR approached AI when the talks with NAIFA broke down, and now that AI's merger with ASA and company has fallen apart, I would not be a bit surprised to see AI and NAR join together.

A wise man once said "The only ship that will not sail is a partnership".

NAR and AI make as good of a match as the NRA and PETA. Dissimilar interests, but partnering looks good in a PC world run amok.
