Starting a new business

I've started up a side business that is quickly becoming the main attraction. It's an incredible feeling --- to think that soon I can say to a PITA appraisal assignment, "Nope, I really don't have the time. Maybe my colleague, Starvin' Marvin Appraiser can knock that out for you." :new_smile-l:

Alison, that sounds very exciting! Good for you! What kind of side business did you start up? I'm looking myself for something new and worthwhile.

It sounds like all the good appraisers will be leaving the business with only Skippy to fill out the forms for the AMCs. Finally they will be getting just what they want, fast and cheap and nothing more.

I play saxophone in a band. I make anywhere from $80 to $200 per gig. That is pretty good money considering I can't play the sax worth a crap.

Maybe if you took that pipe out of your mouth?

Just about got my jug seasoned right and don't forget my spoons...I actually saw a board with an amp and a pickup once that a guy used to stomp is foot on instead of a drum. Very bloozey.

We need to get your southern up to date....

I stated that I saw(viewed) a board that had a pickup(microphone of sorts) so that when he stomped his foot on it, it was amplified and kept time for him.

Is that better? Just because a southerner says pickup does it mean a truck, LOL.

But I will admit that post was hard to follow....

I have been gone back to doing classic car and fine art appraisals. I have to go to Macon GA this week and appraise an art collection that will be donated to a local college. Nice trip and a $2500 fee and no comp check BS. Last month I appraised a Ferrari collection and got to take a Ferrari F40 for a spin.

I have been making some nice guitars again as well. Made a Flying V and just got an order for a Billy Gibbons Model.

Stopped doing marketing for my real estate appraisal business. I was going out twice a week taking to local banks and it was just too depressing. It looks to me that it will take 3 years to fix this mess from bank folks I talk to. I figured time was better spent in the wood shop.

I also help at theraputic riding center for no charge. We have 13 rescue horses and help handicaped kids learn to ride at no charge.

My wife is finsished with grad school and starts her new jo next week so it is nice to have her go to work for a change.

My main jobs now that real estate is a side job.

Those are sweet guitars you make there steve, I'm a drummer myself but can appreciate good guitars. I would like to try and make a snare drum of my own some day.

How does one get into appraising classic cars? Is there a website or someplace else to direct me to? I would like to diversify and do other types of appraising and i love cars.

I went back to being a Chippendales dancer two weekends a month and do private dances for bachelorette parties occasionally through the week. It's grueling work and I hate the women pawing at me, but I can make more jack in one night doing that than I can in one month of doing comp checks.

The chicks dig my country boy flair. I have a pair of bibs with velcro sides. I wear them with no shirt, a straw hat and I usually have a strand of wheat in my mouth. Oh yeah. The ladies love me.

You've peaked my curiosity as well Alison, what is your new venture? Many congrats to you, that's great.

My husband is part owner in a high tech/electronics company which has been fairly well known in the Bay Area. I can hold on for a while longer since he works full time and in addition to his salary he gets a bonus commission check every month based on what he has sold. That helps tremendously, and sometimes it covers what we need for the month. But there are many months that we just squeak by and then I start to worry.

It's great to hear that so many of you are making money at some of your hobbies, or have found something fulfilling to do while things are slow. I'm not surprised though, because appraisers are diverse and amazing people. :new_llying:
